The new Honda Rancher 420 (fuel injected/water cooled/autoclutch manual transmission) if you need a 4wd. It is way more sporty than I ever hoped a utility could be! A lot of utilities are needlesly large and needlesly heavy.....you don't need a big bore work quad, so I would avoid these like the plague...
If you can ride a 2wd sport quad, the Honda 400EX is the best trail quad out there. If the terrain is more open and a little faster, then the Z400 might be a good choice.

Z400 from Suzuki is the best all around sport quad you can find.
for 4X4, Cat or Polaris cant go wrong with either!

Do you want a sport or a 4x4 ATV?
For a sport, i would get a 400EX. I like the feel and stability of them.
I Cant comment on a 4x4. My first one was a 400 fourtrax 4x4. It got the job done, and after 10,000+ miles, it still runs great. I am however brand loyal to my Arctic Cat 4x4. It has exceeded my needs by far and has gone threw the worst crap and got me back home. There will be alot of opinions on this subject.

Polaris 800 with the same mods I've made (see below) would serve you well.
If you are new to the ATV scene, I would borrow a unit from a friend, rent, or buy a cheap, used machine and see if it suits you. Once you're hooked, you start to save up for your 2nd quad, it's more likely to be what you really want
Whatever you buy, keep the weight down for your 1st machine. After a little experience, you'll know what type of riding you'll be doing most and be better able to handle the heavier/more powerful machines.
Yamaha Wolverines are a good start...relatively light, sporty, 4x4.

deffinitely listen to honeyduck. i would look around for a used atv in good condition, maybe a 400 to 450 yamaha 4x4, polaris magnum 325s and 330s, polaris sportsman 400s, something along those lines. research them real well before you go out and buy anything and you should be in good shape. if you have any friends with atvs you should deffinitely talk to them about trying theirs out. its even better if you have friends with 4x4s and ones with sport atvs, it will easily show you what 4x4 owners and sport atv owners argue about endlessly. its all an oppinion and what will suit you best. never go only by what someone tells you, you need to find out for yourself

If your riding in mountain country and wanting to take it easy and eventually trail ride, sure sounds like you need a 4x4 to me... do you like climbing over stuff and exploring, or ripping around turns, jumps and gearing wide open straights?

I am new to ATVs and don't know anything about them. I plan to start doing a little riding. I am going to start out easy on somewhat hilly but open land until I get the hang of it and then I am going to go hit some trails. I live near Windrock Mtn in Anderson County, TN. For someone new to ATVs what do you recommend?
