If you're going to be riding with ATV's, get an ATV, or vise versa.

Get the ATV, you can use it year a round

i would say do what i did i got an mx bike not a trail bike for playing in gravel pits and tracks and i got a 4x4 fourwheeler for playing in the mud and trail riding. oh 115 on snowmobile and 68 on my fourwheeler.

Wow am I late to respond. Haven't been online much lately (fishing season)
Anyway NCOR,
If you are a good rider on a bike you can keep up and pass wheelers, but my advice, in the long run I think you will appreciate it the most if you get a nice 4x4 wheeler. Also I would recommend a set of itp 589's for when you go out and play.
If you every come up north send me an email and we will go riding.

My lawn mower is 4x4 and pops sweet wheelies.

I would definately say the plus side is for the ATV! Bikes are fun, but not in mud, snow, standing water, or rock challenging trails!
Posted by: v2rider
I will never turn back from having a 4x4 ute
Posted by: v2rider
4x4s are fast, but the sportsman isnt that fast. I top at about 70mph, and my buddies sp700 is far behind me. His tops about 63-64. The 800 is a different story. But on the other hand, when your 4x4 riding in the deepest part of the woods, its not a good idea to go 70mph on a 700lb+ machine!! Nobody will find you out there.

158 on my Ninja

if i were you i would go for the atv because mn is mostly mud and there arent many trails for ohm riders. but, if you really want a ohm i would get one. by the way an ohm cant keep up with an atv when it gets really muddy but, it can keep up with them pretty well when the trails are not that muddy. i have a tt-r125L and my uncle has a polaris 500 sportsman and when we race through the trails that are hard packed dirt and have no mud i can keep up with him fine. so don't let the muddy trails and atv riders keep you from getting an ohm if you really want one.
Posted by: Chevelle454
i ride the ohm and the atv on the atv trail. I dont think the dnr/county would really care if youre riding an ohm on a atv trail unless the trail has a lot of people on it or the trail is well known.
Posted by: Chevelle454
i ride in aitkin. we have a cabin on a lake and across the lake there are lots of trails to go riding on. i dont know the name of the trails but you could probably find them at the minnesota dnr website.
Posted by: Chevelle454
actually bikes are fun in mud and snow. in the winter i love riding my dirtbike in the snow. its challenging but its a blast. i will also go back in the trails and go through the mudholes. i obviously cant go through as much as an atv and i usually get stuck but that just makes it more fun. plus an ohm can make a pretty sick rooster tail in the mud.
Posted by: Chevelle454
no, i have a 03 tt-r 125l and i have had people who weigh 240-260 lbs ride my bike and they didn't bottom it out at all. im sure you'll be fine.
Posted by: Chevelle454
maybe the magazine said it would bottom out for 200+ guys if you were doing jumps and not trail riding. I dont think yamaha would make a 230 that would bottom out for 200+ guys because a lot of riders are close to or over 200 lbs. I have not heard anything about the 230 popping out of gears.

its like $150. its not worth it.
Posted by: Chevelle454
get a 4x4. we have them and they are a blast year-round. sporty quads are fun on hard packed dirt, tracks and trails but thats about it. 4x4 go on anything and are not limited by things like lots of mud and snow like sporty quads are. plus 4x4s are pretty fast( our 700 EFI can pull up a wheelie and go 70-80 mph).
Posted by: Chevelle454
i dont know whats up with youre friends 700 but thats slow. my uncle has a 00' sp 500 H.O and that does about 64 mph. i have not really tested out the top end in our 06' sp 700 EFI yet (Still in break in mode) but i have got that up to 60 mph very easily. plus the the guy at the place we bought it from said it could go 70-80 mph.
Posted by: Chevelle454
if you ride them fast on street it is dangerous as hell. The tires are so low of psi and they are off-road tires so they will bite when you go fast and pull you really hard so you could flip really easy. i go that fast on gravel roads by my cabin. 70 mph sounds really fast but when you do it on a 4x4 its a real adrenaline rush.
Posted by: Chevelle454
the fastest i have ever gone is about 85 on my uncles polaris 500 indy snowmobile. i was on hard packed snow and when i got going that fast it got really unresponsive like i had no steering (half way down it turned into icy hard packed snow) it got slippery and the sled was all over the place. those two things got my heart thumping because i was on a trail about wide enough for 2 quads. even though its dangerous i like it because i love the adrenaline rush and hey, you only live once. plus next winter im hoping to ride my uncles polaris indy 700 3cyl because he said it can go about 110.
Posted by: Chevelle454
my old neighbors had this really old lawn mower and the clutch would engage so fast that it would pop wheelies without even trying. Good times on that beast.

For trails I'd go with the quad, because any mud makes ridding a dirt bike miserable.

I just realized something MN is an abreviation for Minnesota isn't it?

Hey all,
Im an old trail riding fan, but everything in this state seems to be ATVs(4x4s).
Ive checked out DNR websites, there arent that many shared atv trails, but there are some at least (so hopefully i can ride w/ my friends).
They like to do a lot of minimum maintinence roads, etc. They all say that a bike cant keep up, but i dont know if any of them have ever ridden a motorcycle.
So the question for those mn riders is, can a bike keep up w/ a 4x4. I understand i cant ride through 4 ft of mud, but isnt there always another way? (over or around)?
just trying to decide what to buy, i think 4x4s are fun, but you dont feel as free on 1 as you do a bike

trails get pretty muddy huh?
damn, i should just work overtime and buy both BR>
i swear, if i clocked the amount of hrs i spend researching, i could have a helicopter BR>
Posted by: ncorrieri
do you just ride the ohm on the atv trail?
Posted by: ncorrieri
where do you ride chevelle?
Posted by: ncorrieri
hey, im seriously thinking about getting 1 of the yamaha 230s for woods/technical trail riding
think a fatass (250) dude will bottom those out too much (i wont be doing much jumps.. and if i start, i will tradeup to a crf250x)
Whatcha think?
Posted by: ncorrieri
really? thats crazy - dirt rider mag supposedly said it bottoms out for the 200+ guys
Did they have problems at all with it popping out of gear? heard the 6 speeds on the ttr230s at least had probs.
that would be sweet if a ttr would work
1) yamaha blue
2) its like 2k
3) ttr230 starts way better in the cold than the crf230
Posted by: ncorrieri
thanks chevelle, now i just have to get off my indecisive ass and buy something!
Posted by: ncorrieri
lol i spoke w/ the dnr via email, they said i would get fined for riding OHMs on ATV only trails, but they wouldnt tell me what the fines are.
If its 20$ for a day of fun, i wouldnt mind that, but if its like 150 - no thanks! BR>
Posted by: ncorrieri
gah theres no freaking MX trails by my house
christ now im going to have to get an ATV or move back to colorado
Posted by: ncorrieri
lol, now i gotta debate wether or not to try to get a sporty quad vs a ut 4x4
With the right tires and 50mph, who needs to go in the mud when you can fly over it??
but does that mean no snow riding?
shiiiyat.
Posted by: ncorrieri
yeah i guess i should just got get 1. i know a dealer that will get rid of their 02 ac 500 for 3.5 after taxes, etc, so not too terrible
Posted by: ncorrieri
god, where are you going 60mph at on these 4x4s?
street?
