i would go with the kodiak.....2 strokes will always need more maintainence

I have found both of these in my area and they are both going for right at $3000( my limit) out the door. Which one should I go with. Both are AUTO and 4X4..Which should I go with. 2cycle V. 4, Reliability, performance etc. Of course both dealers had negatives to say about the others brand. Or is it a toss up. Thanks you guys have been a big help on my other postings.

I guess it must be just like choosing a Ford or Chevy. Reading other threads sounds like both units have their following and both are relatively reliable as long as regular maintainence is followed. Just from what I've read I'm leaning toward the Kodiak.

Thanks guys that is pretty much the conclusion I have come to. Though not a big deal, the 2 stroke factor is just one more thing to worry about. It seems like I have read alot more maintainence issues with the polaris models over all as well. Just the impression I've got anyway.

Finally drove the 2000 Kodiak. It was awsome. The only concern I have is that when engaged in 4WD when I crank the handle bars in a sharp turn I get alot of clunking up front. 2WD is fine and 4WD when not cranking in a sharp turn is fine. Not having experience with 4WD Units, is this common? The cv boots have just been replaced and the dealer said even the Brand new ones do that in sharp turns. He said it was completely serviced and everything was in good shape.

I would pass on the Xplorer because its a 2-stroke. More maintenance and less fuel milage. Whatever greater hp the 2-stroke Polaris might have, it is offset by the heavier weight of the Polaris.
Both are good machines though...

Dont be fooled, Polaris makes a good, dependable quad. My father has a '94 Polaris 400L 4x4 (basically the same as the Polaris you are considering) and untill recently it has always run flawlessly, only needing minor maintenance (tires, spark plugs, batteries). Recently, the exhaust pipe got plugged up with carbon (my father lets the quad idle a lot) and it lost a lot of power. He put a new pipe on it and now its as good as new. Overall, its been a good machine.
However, I dont think a 2-stroke is a good idea for a utility quad. 4-strokes produce more torque at low rpms and are better in my opinon for utility use. I used to have an '00 Polaris Xplorer 250 4x4 and for using it for working around the yard it wasnt the best because it never ran long enough for the pipe to stay hot. 2-strokes dont run well with a cold pipe. With a 4-stroke, you can start it, move the quad, shut it off, then start it again a while later and it runs just fine.
You also have the added cost of oil with a 2-stroke. It might not be a huge expense, but it adds up, especially if you use your quad year-round.
