You could go into the atv trader sites and see what types of quads are in your price range. Keep in mind that some of them will be priced a little high because of being on the net. Some people think that they can get more money over the net. You might come across a good deal.

I've never bought anything that I couldn't inspect and ride first. I would be hesitant buying something under those conditions. (Especially used) I like to use the sites as a reference to see if the local dealers could do better on their prices. But if the atv for sale happens to be within a persons purchase range. (distance willing to travel) Then it may be worth looking into the atv for sale. Even the new atv's might have something wrong with them. You never know.
It is tempting when you see the quad you want alot cheaper 1500 miles away.

Just look everything over. Check frame for damage, check to see if things line up, check to see if hubs need work or seem loose, check condition of oil, are the handle bars in alignment when tires are straight, how does it sound, does the clutch work well, does it appear beat?
I'm not sure if that is a good deal. It depends on it's condition.

hey Coyotechaser, did you ever buy one from a dealer on atv trader? i'm thinking about doing that but i'm just a little worried about getting a used machine from 1,500 miles away.

thanks Coyotechaser, i agree, i guess i'm going to look around closer to me first. I wonder what would happen if I get it and something is wrong with it upon delivery. has anyone on this forum ever bought a machine from another state? I'm in NJ and trying to buy from MO or IL.
