If he can't handle a KDX200, he better start with a 250EX, or maybe a Yamaha Breeze.

My cousin is looking to get a quad, and he wants to get the new Yamaha Raptor. I told him he might like the Honda 400 EX better, since it's been out on the market longer, has a simpler air-cooled motor, and has Honda build quality. I think a Raptor might be too much for him. Plus, he might be able to get a good deal on a used 400EX, whereas I doubt anybody will be selling any Raptors any time soon, at least not with a good price. What do you think is the better quad for him? He's ridden dirt bikes before, so he's not a total beginner. I ride a Kawasaki KDX 200 dirt bike, and he said it was a litte hard to control from him, and he likes quads better. So I'm thinking a Raptor is going to be too fast for him, and the 400EX is going to be plenty powerful enough. What's a good price on a used 400 EX?

Depending on what the quad would be used for, depends on which one. The raptor would be a better choice for drag racing and for sand dunes. The 400ex is a much better quad for racing. It out handles everything new(except maybe the new cannondales). For trail riding, it is a toss-up. The raptor may be better for high speed open trails, where a 400ex would be better for a trail with lots of twists and turns.
