Some of us old guys get a little frustrated with the manufacturers too. When you see Honda coming out with a 55hp, aluminum framed, super trick dirt bike without a single warning sticker on it and compare it to what us ATVers have to choose from, you see a pretty big performance disparity. True, the manufacturers are trying to thread their way around some sticky liability issues, but that doesn't explain away all of the design flaws seen on every new sport quad out there, from the Raptor's balsa wood axel to Honda's hamster powered EX's. The short shrift Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, et al are giving to their ATV divisions breeds a certain amount of contempt from consumers.
Sorry about the crappy spelling. You kids pay attention in school or you'll find yourself having to work like a mad man to pay for all your toys!

I'm 16, and I have a confession to make.. I'm one of those guys you people hate. I bought my Banshee last year, $3,000. Since then, I have put over $2,000 into it. (Worked for EVERY thing on it). A few weeks ago, after a concussion(wreck), my mom said she thought it was time for me to get another quad. I found a supernice 250R, for a good price. I somehow talked her into it, and she paid for it. Now, i have to sell the Banshee and pay her back.. Kind of a loan type thing.. right?
Trxter, I feel your pain man. If Honda would've put all the technology into the TRX250R as they have the CR250R, NOTHING could touch it..

You guys are digging up some antique posts here!
But, on a followup....
I cracked the case on my 250R, so now I get to spend the $300+ to get a new one. I guess I should start looking for a 2nd job!

AdamScrambler,
It's really good to see someone buy their own quad, at your age. A 12 year old in our town was handed a full LSR/Honda 250R set up for flattracking. His parents have more in their back pocket than in their head. He just bought an $800 set of Ohlins shocks, $500 set of Full Bore plastic, and he says his parents are going to buy him a 400EX for christmas... This isn't the way to raise a kid!! Make him work for it!

I keep reading these posts, everybody complaining about why nobody builds the perfect quad, in their opinion. And then, "mine is better, faster, etc. than yours." Then, just look at the lists of "mods" everybody lists on their quads. Why does it matter who built it or how they designed it? It seems to me most people are going to spend hundreds of dollars changing them anyway! And, I'm guessing, about half are spending their parent's money anyway. I just wonder why anyone would be involved in a sport if they are so unhappy with everything the manufactures put on the market? Why not get your education, which, from a lot of the spelling I see on here, quite a few are neglecting, and then get involved with the industry where you can have some POSITIVE input in the market? Just an old man's observations. I'm sure we'll see a lot of immature replys to this post, but that's OK. Might even be a couple who agree with me? Jim

OhioScrambler, on the contrary! You sound like a pretty responsible guy to me.

How do you like your 99 Formula 500? I have a 96 Formula SLS 500. It rocks!

You might take this as immature, but I am 23, bought my own quad, spent my own money on my upgrades(not much right now),and bought my own truck along with another truck, and working on getting a trailer right now. Yes it does bother me to see all these young people busting up there quads because they know Mom or Dad will pay to fix them. I am sometimes a little too careful when I ride but in the long run it cost me less. I look at it this way, if I break it I have to fix it.
Just my 2 cents!!!

Am glad to see that LBZfreestyler. I love to see it when young kids show responsibility, and pay for there own things. I started out that way, and have been that way ever since.
Great Job LBZ

Ok, my mom bought me my first quad, but I sill had to work for it, and everything I owned since is because I sold the first one to pay for the next. Now my mom just had a baby so now I have to get a job to get a new quad, I would much rather work for my quad than have it handed to me for a couple reasons, but mainly because it would truely be MINE! that I payed for, and also, your parents can't hold it against you(used guilt trip to get me to paint our house and help build a new back porch, but I feel I had to do it to pay them back) so you shouldn't really gripe about some of us that do get ONE quad from our parents, because we are still working for it. Speaking of jobs, any idea's (15, nobody wants to hire me)

well i'm 16. my dad got me my first quad (the quadracer) but only cuyz he got a great deal on it. we hadf this really crappy chrysler laser and some guy gave us the quad and 900 dollars for the car. when the quad got stolen my dad payed the hundred dollar deductable on the quad. thats about where it stops. i have to pay for all my own gas, replacement parts and aftermarket goodies. you'll notice that my ex is stock. well thats cuz i'm poor and i have to buy all my own crap. i'm savin up tho.

I've also wondered about the finances behind the machines mentioned here. Seems a lot of the people with new quads are under 18. Just an observation.

ive owned 3 quads, and my parents have never, EVER, even thought for one second about puttings a penny into my four wheeler. when i was ten, i forked cow crap from barns to pay for my mojave. when i was fourteen, i worked in a milk barn and two farms and three tobacco feilds to pay for the debt between my mojave and a 300ex. then when i was 16, which i am now, i traded my 300ex to my tecate4.. i've payed for all parts and mods. i had over 2,000.00 dollars worth of mods in my 300ex, and i paid for all of it. i've got friends who's parents have bought them brand new, 5,000.00 dollars fourwheelers, and buy them all the extra parts, but i promise you, they dont appreciate their 4 wheeler nearly as much as i do, i know my parents are teaching me to be responsible by making me pay,, i think all kids should have to work and pay for anything like this. i just wanted to let you know that not all 16 year olds are spoiled brats,,some of us are hard working people who deserve what we have.

i'm under 18, my parents haven't even looked at my quad for more than two seconds let alone buy or fix it, it still isn't running! and i've got more money than my parents! ever since I was ten years old I've wanted a quad, you could definitely call it an obsession. this year I finally purchased my rolling chassis quadracer with a basket case engine for 700 bucks, that was every last penny I had. I've saved 500 up since then and I am trying to find an engine. If anyone has an engine they would like to sell I will buy it.

Im 16 turning 17 in december. I own a 86 trx250r race ready and a 2000 banshee with pipes nerfs and more. I've worked at my dads company full time in the summer since i was 14. I also work some weekends. I bought both of my quads. I paid for half of mine/dads sled (99 ski-doo formula 500) and I just recently sold my mom my sea-doo in order to pay for my 250r. Now Im not saying My parents don't buy me anything they do buy me alot. I guess you could say im spoiled but my quads i did pay for. And i don't take it easy when I ride them, I go as fast as i can. I mean I don't try to break them, I avoid all hazrds but i don't putt putt around. Also I do all the work on my quads myself, all engine rebuilds all performance upgrades etc. the only thing the shop has ever done for me was rebuild my suspension and port and polish my cyclinder. I love working on my quads, it gives me a sense of reality because i no when i break something i have to fix it instead of going raceing the next weekend. ....

well, i am 34 years old, and my first quad was purchased 5 years ago, when i could finally afford one. I dreamed of owning a quad since they were born, but in MY FAMILY, you paid rent from 15 on. At 18 i had to go on my own, and was a father for the first time when i was 19. So, when i see responsibility, i see it start on the food i eat, the cloths i wear, and the roof over my head. When you say YOU paid for the 4 wheelers, then just remember, you paid for them, couse your parents pay for you to live and eat. My 15 year old is now saving money to buy a used 4 wheeler, (thank god, so i can have mine back, haha). Dont get me wrong, i think its great to see young men and woman saving and being responcible to there toys, just never forget who takes care of you's so you can take care of you's too. Becouse of how i was raised, i have a love and a RESPECT for the toys i own, and i see it taking shape in my oldest son. Of corse, he has no responcibility like food, or rent, but he does see where i get my values from.

Hi, I just turned 14 years old, and raise the $4950 to buy a 2001 Polaris scrambler 400. I had absolutely no help at all from my parents. It's stock right now, but soon to come are an AAEN top-end pipe, clutch kit, and jet kit.Does that sound like good first mods to ya'll? does anyone recomend anything else? Oh yeah, did I mention I'm paying for all my mods by myself!
