With that much experience I'd say go wit the Raptor. It does have a few weak spots (axel, tippy, etc.) but it's alot more thrilling to ride than the EX. Also, you will get smoked from time to time on the EX by Raptors, Ds's, et al.

i'd probably get the raptor. they do have a lot of problems that could end costing A LOT of money but they were supposedley fixed for 2002. also i think the raptors look cooler and the reverse is a nice feature even if you don't need it. now the 400 on the other hand is more reliable and has better handling and suspsension. but its slow! with a few mods tho it can easily be very fast. i'd try riding both before you decided for sure tho.

Here is the scoop. I am giving my new (2 month old) quad to my wife and I am upgrading. I am very experienced with about 16 years riding. I have narrowed my choice to the 400EX or the Raptor. I can get a new 400EX for $5024.00 out the door or a new Raptor for $5924 out the door. The extra $900 is not a factor. I like the idea of reverse on the Raptor. But I like the durable reputation of Honda and the 400EX is proven to be tough. I also hear that the Raptor has a few problems and doesnt handle or jump and land as well as the 400EX. But I also dont want to buy the 400EX if the Raptor's, DS650's, and Banshee's blow by me. Help me out guys, I am going to make my purchase Tuesday night.

well budha,
Ove been debating almost the same question too! I have an awesome 250r but ive been wanting a 4-stroke from 400ex, to a raptor, then ds650, then cannondale, all to come back to the 400ex! the Raptor has a good nickname for it, the Craptor! Its a Yamaha and Yamaha is a good brand but still its not even close to HONDA! the ex's are the MOST reliable and best handling "Dirt Wheels" of of any other high performance quad there is! you could easilt take that $1000 bucks and make the 400ex a fast 416ex! I know not all raptors are bad and im not sayin all you yamaha guys are riding crap its just that HONDA uses the BEST parts when building a quad or bike! so I plan on buying myself a 400, and making it a 416 MX Machine!
