For the funds available, keep the 400ex.
I doubt you'll find a TRX or YFZ for what you have available.

The quadzilla shouldn't even be mentioned........
In my opinion, for a beginner xc racer(who needs time on a bike, and doesn't have the money to trick a quad out).........I'd say go with the Predator 500. They make an xc version of it.....that comes with many upgrades.
The 450's are very similar......you really can't go wrong with either of them, but you will need to do a little work to them to make them race ready, where the predator might already get you by.

The zilla is very old, and way out dated. The power would not be the same. In races like this, a 4stroke is the best bet. You want a quad with good even power, that will be a sure bet to finish the race.......

yeah........but would that be your choice of bike?? I dunno......with technology and all, I'd pick a new 4 stroke if it were me. they come so race ready, and are very reliable.
The quadzillas that you are talking about surely have quite a bit of $$ held up in mods, as compared to the 450's I'd hope.......

And.........he said he didn't want it.

I realized what you said......either way I put it......means you don't really care to talk about it.
I don't really know what used yfz's are going for........but you could probably find a decent one somewhere......

True, a zilla is not the best quad for an enduro...but to say it is out-dated is wrong. I still see LT500s running circles around some of the new 450s in a variety of racing conditions.
The only way a Zilla is going to compete in any competition is if it is in a straight line.BR>
For XC racing I'd say any modern 4-stroke would be fine, even a 400ex, it is mostly rider. I would say one of the 450's would be you best bet tho, if the money is there.

The LT-R450 might be a little to wide for woods racing.

I don't know man. The 450's are holding their value pretty well, you might find one for around $4000 that may be a little rough.
And I thought this was for your friend?
