There are all types of racing for the atv. The 2 most common types in your area are mx and cross country. There are also hillclimbing, short track or flat track, drag racing(sand and dirt),desert, indoor, etc. What you need to do is to decide what type of riding that you like to do and go that way. If you like jumping, you most likey will want to do mx (motocross). If you like trail riding, then cross country will be your thing. Try both and/or watch some to see what you like.

I have seen more people jurt at MX races. Some of the reason is that they are tring jumps that are bigger than what the person can do for there skill level. But, again I have seen pro's come up short and get hurt also.
XC races most of the time are either 1, 1/1/2, or 2 hrs in length.
I watch MX, but race XC myself. I don't like to jump, but I can go fast between the trees.

This isn't neccessarily true. I race MX and have never crashed on the mx track, however, I have had a couple bad crashes racing XC and riding at the dunes. I'm not saying that MX is safer because there is always risk involved with any type of racing you decide to do. Like tprender said, most crashes are from racers riding outside of their skill level. If you race smart, and ride within your limits, you should be ok. One of the worst crashes I have seen was actually during a flattrack race. As the saying goes, there are two types of riders, those that have crashed, and those that haven't crashed yet.

If you are unsure about what type of racing you want to do, try checking out a few different types of races in your area and talk to some of the racers. Most are more than happy to answer any questions you have.

Here is a link to some events on the ATVA website that are coming up in Indiana.
