Here is a quick rundown of things to do to your quad in order from first to last:
1. nerf bars
2. kill switch
3. 18" rear tires, preferably on 8" wheels with bead locks
4. 19" front tires on offset wheels
5. extended rear axle
6. steering stabilizer
7. rear shock, PEP ZPS
8. front shocks, PEP ZPS
9. aluminum handle bars, Renthals, pick a bend you like. dont get the motorcycle bend, which is too low and forward for a quad.
10. Engine - pipe & silencer, larger carburetor then porting.
Take care of the handling first, then when you get the motor done you we be alot faster.

I agree totally with untamedracer25!!!
The first 3 things to do to go faster:::
suspension
suspension
suspension
(hows that? )

I think we replied correctly BR>
I just purchased a bone stock 86 motor. It's got plenty of power. It's my suspention that makes it fast. PEP's BR>As this dude's riding skills equall to the stock 250R's performance, he then will find the need for more power.
Please don't get me wrong, I love the high revs of my CGR 250cc cyl. And really love the awsome grunt of my CGR 310cc cyl.
I rode and raced, all on the stock shocks. The good motors did virtually nothing for me, cept help me get beat-up.I finally got myself shocks. Biggest speed improvement that I've made.I can ride harder and longer now.
The turtle has PEP shocks~~ The rabbit a big fast motor...LOL

IMO:: PEP shocks are the best. You can have them re-build your stock rear for a cpl hundred $. For the front either the ZPS or the limited mass. If you are not a big jumper, the limited mass afe surely good enough.
axel/a-arms: Lone Star Racing. +4 axel and +2"+1" rec a-arms.
Your swingarm is fine for now. I'd ride it a while to see if you need a "shorter" swingarm. I have a 1988 -1". I wish I had the length of swingarm you have. (so you understand, if you was to ask for a swingarm, everyone goes by the stock 1988 length as a standard.Yours would actually be called a +2" compared to the 1988 length.)
These will get you sitting pretty, hooking up, and handling great!
Have fun BR>

This is your call. Surely their shock is better. Mine is a rebuild and suits me well for 600$ savings BR>If you have plans on racing competitvely, then get the best.
FYI: I do about all you can on mine. MX,TT,XC,dunes, trails,RR tracks, roads, etc.Mind you I'm certainly no pro, but at the PAATVING rally I was hitting a jump 4th gear pinned Could it ride better? YES,,,,Do I need it that much better? NO

First: take the head gasket off, It should separate into 3 pieces, use 1 This will bump the compression and still run pump gas.

I would go with
-reeds - I have V-force and love them
-carb - 38 mm AS
-pipe - My choice is ESR on pipes, but its your quad
-port/polish - mine was done by Trinity, came with quad when I bought it......seems to work great for me
-cr head gasket - ups compression
Im planning an ESR top end in the future......leaning toward 330pv as I am planning on 75% sand riding, and want reliability
It also depends on what riding you will be doing.
tune it and rip.......

he is asking about power, not how to hook it up.
If your looking for more power, and on a budget you can shave your head for a little more torque, port the motor, put some decent reeds in it, get yourself a pipe, and you just picked yourself up 15-20horse.
Now do your tire and suspension mods
Posted by: DaBeechMan
Thats cool. Im just razzing you guys. BUT the best way to get power to the ground is very little to no suspension at all. I know you guys take whoops and turns and what not, but its always a drag race to the first corner

Ernie da man. I like the way that cat thinks. lol
Posted by: Ernie660R
I would go with DaBeechMan, simply because its a lot cheaper than suspension. Look at it this way if you can handle the quad with the little engine mods and stock suspension, then imagine what you could do with aftermarket suspension parts on your quad.
Just my .02 worth!

Thanks LT80 for the explanation of +1, +2, etc. I always thought the number was relative to whatever came stock on your model year (1986 for skilled4reel). I also didn't realize that Honda started making the swing arm shorter (your -1 comment). Why would they do this? Turning radius, frame integrity(landing 4th gear pinned jumps), suspension advantage? Just curious. It seems like as the hp started to climb in 1985, Honda would have kept making a longer and longer swingarm to try and keep the front wheels close to the ground. On second thought, I guess they did do that when they bolted on the other front wheel.
Anyhew, one more question for all of you that talked about the shaved head for more compression. Does anyone have any insight about how much you can shave off and still be able to run 90-92 octane pump gas? I have a stock 1985 250r with a Wiseco pro-lite, DG pipe/silencer, Boyseen reeds, and reed spacer. It runs real good for now (can't afford 330PV for $1500), but head shaving seems pretty easy/cheap.

Untamed racer,
I tried to PM you, but received error message.
I am from Marysville, MI.
Where do you ride in the area? I ride at my bro's place and surrounding area (St.Clair County Airport). Sometimes we can make it out to the strip mall off Range Rd, by I-94 and ride around there. I've even seen some people trailer into there. Some new riding area would be cool though. Can't stay in any one area for too long (especially the airport), unless you want to have a good cat and mouse exercise (haven't been caught yet and want to keep it that way).
PS. The gasket kit I bought for my piston rebuild had a head gasket that seemed like it was already one piece with a metal ring. Did I get a different gasket type, am I running higher comp already because of it, or do you need to try and peel apart the gasket?

Id say go with CT's 410 stroker kit..

My suggestion is, before you go all hog wild on making the motor faster, spend the money and time now on the suspension. A fast motor does you no good if you dont have the suspension to help you out. Trust me, I made this mistake and regret it. Get some shocks and maybe a-arms. Then sink money in the motor - reed cage, bigger carb, port and polished head.
Posted by: UntamedRacer25
He may not have been asking about suspension, but we thought we would save him some time and physical torture and recommend the suspension first. The fastest motor does nothing if it wont hook up. We are just speaking from experience, and what we wish we would have done.
Posted by: UntamedRacer25
Point taken Yeah, if it worked for jumping, id definately have no suspension, but I kinda like being all in one piece and not jolted around like im on a mechanical bull. LOL
Posted by: UntamedRacer25
Honestly, if I were you, I would just spend the money and have them re-do stock. For now that will be fine. Then, when you get advanced enough where you need it, spend the extra money to get the new one from them. No point in making an already expensive sport more expensive
Posted by: UntamedRacer25
Yeah, you do have a point there. But its not really being able to handle the quad with the upgrades to the motor. Its keeping the tires in contact with the ground so you can go in faster. I guess this is all relative to what type of riding you are doing though. If it is motocross, a quad with suspension and stock motor vs stock suspension and upgraded motor, the one with suspension will win with both having equally skilled riders. Drag racing, yeah, the motors gonna win. I guess my mind is geared more towards the motocross aspect of it. I fail to remember sometimes that there are other things to do with a quad. lol Basically, its all up to you and what you want to do with your money, we are all just trying to make suggestions and help is all.

Ok, we are just trying to help. But, if you want cheap mods, go for what LT80 said, take 2 layers off the gasket. Also, look into new aftermarket reeds and cage. If you dont ride in water, go for a bolt on flange and eliminate the airbox totally. If you do that, you want to get a prefilter for your filter. If you dont feel comfortable having the filter out there like that, just eliminate the airbox lid or drill holes in it, about 1" to 1 1/2". Also look into a new pipe and silencer combo, depending on how old the fmf is.

In this area, I dont really ride anywhere. Especially now since I am in between quads. lol But my older bro takes his out by that strip mall sometimes. He takes his truck out there too to play. He said its a good time. When I do get to ride, its usually on tracks. I have a friend in Emmett with a track and one of my teammates has a track out in Lapeer. Other than that, just playin around on trails up north when I go and cruisin around the subdivision I live in on the south side of town. lol You are right, its hard to find a good riding area around here.
As far as the gasket goes, if it is a one piece gasket, it depends on if it is a thick one or thinner. I wouldnt try peeling it apart. Most of the regular 250r gaskets are a metal type gasket with three separate layers. You may have a cr250 gasket, which is perfect, and will have you running slightly higher compression. Or just one thick gasket. If it is a thick one, get a cr250 gasket and you will be running higher compression.

I just got my first 250r. It is a bone stock 86 trx 250r. Except for fmf pipe and silencer & k&n filter.
What are the first things i should do to make it faster? Wich item's would produce the most power?
Please help me!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: skilled4reel
Get that spelling right and you will be alright.
Posted by: skilled4reel
What brand, and model shock should i get?
Should i get different a-arms?
Extend the swingarm?
Should i get a wider axle?
Posted by: skilled4reel
When you say peps can rebuild my rear shock is this good? Will it be as good as one of there shocks? Or should i buy one of there's?
Posted by: skilled4reel
Do guys have an address, phone number,or maybee a website so i can send them my stock rear shock??????????
Posted by: skilled4reel
Come on guys i dont want all you guy sayin, yea what he said you need shocks. I want to know the best and cheapest engine mods.
Please help me
