I run a small engine repair shop out of my barn. Nothing too serious...but I'm never hurting for customers. The problem with stocking parts is the overhead. I keep oils/plugs/filters/chains...that kind of thing on the shelf. There is no way I could afford to keep pipes and extra A-arms sitting all over the place...just hoping someone decides to buy them.
Those items are custom for the most part.... If it was my only job...then maybe I could afford to expand and start stocking aftermarket. I cannot think of a dealer in my area that has all that stuff on the shelf....they would go bankrupt waiting for a purchaser.

I have been into this for a while now...Just do not get yourself in over your head.. It is a costly venture. And very risky. Because of the many different makes and models out there....It is next to impossible to stock for each individual machine. Your talking in the thousands of dollars.

I have bought so many race parts from mail order suppliers, what parts would you like to see at the local race shop??
RPM Dominator axles, Custom Axis shocks....what else??
maybe even a frequent buyer program.

You are right, it does take alot of overhead and you can only do what you can afford. However, my intention is to be fully stocked with all of the race parts that know one has in stock, which is always a pain. Yes it will take alot of money, but that is a service that needs to be there if I intend to take care of the racer and trail rider. There are several factors to keeping something in stock and not selling your inventory, people have to know about.

I would like to see a full race shop with everything to build a race quad from the ground up aftermarket and some stock parts as well, plus gear, etc...

THAT is the problem, Dreyer's doesn't carry crap for the racer! No race parts unless you want gear, nerfs or bumpers. I believe you can stock aftermarket shocks, 80% of works orders consist of 2 valve and spring setups and you can stock a combination of main and tender springs and valve shims and custom build the valving and spring rates. It can be done. Thanks for the info, looking forward to the indoor deal starting soon. I hope to come down and check it out the 15th.

If you stock the stuff behind the counter glass, every costumer has to look at it everytime the buy spark plugs whatever. Theyre gonna drool over the counter for a week or 2 and then they will crack and buy that stuff

Alright I think they should have all types of tires and wheels.Also aftermarket A-arms,swingarms and axle's,shocks and alot of oem parts to.
Also riding gear and movies to.
I just went to buy heovos 4 and no one around here has it!

I think what sets a true quad shop apart from other motocross shops is aftermarket a-arms, swingarms, shocks, steering stems, bumpers, nerf bars, and other aftermarket chassis-related parts in plain view. Most motorcycle/ATV shops here in Las Vegas have maybe a bumper or two and a set of nerfbars hanging on the walls. You might even see a pair of Works shocks if you're lucky... I think the reason for this is the local shops try to evenly spread motorcycle and ATV parts throughout the store, and usually don't carry some of the more expensive aftermarket chassis parts for quads.
One store, however, has just about every aftermarket quad part hanging on the walls, and from the ceiling... Basically, just get one of everything, and stock them in plain view so customers can see what you sell when they walk in... Try to put as many parts as you can in places where the customers can see them (don't stock everything in the back if possible).

The closest shop around here is just a ripp off. He tried sellin me a twist throttle for $75, and since they didn't have it in stock he told me I would have to pay shipping.I just left. The only thing I would like to see is racing gear.

There is no way to stock aftermarket shocks. Each shock is custom built for a reason, to fit you perfectly. A-arms would be a little
better but there are still a bunch of different combinations a person could go with : so much out, so much forward,camber , castor, blah
blah. It would be nice to be able to carry all that stuff but from
a business standpoint you couldn't do it.If your in Indy check out Dreyers to see what all they carry.

Then you have to have someone certified to build Works shocks on premises,
you take responsibility for them when they blow -out or bend. It all goes
back to overhead. It would cost you more to have a mechanic that is both
a shock and bike or quad mechanic, than it would to have just a bike and quad mechanic. We are hoping to have the pro-shop done by January, since we will have a motocross track 10 ft. from it we will probably stock more
racing parts than most places. Oh also we had to postpone our open
