Keeps air from going into the tank. If the valve is off, the engine will stall after a few minutes from an air lock in the tank, it can also can keep water out if the thing sits in the rain, it also keeps the tank from leaking if the bike overturns, but why would you be driving with it off? Not really any reason I guess, Yamaha's had a hose from the tank cap vent to the handlebar, that worked fine also. I never turn mine off, because I always forget to turn the thing on then it stalls.

Gas cap on honda has a dial on top on/off
This dial does not lock the cap !
Someone told me its for when its in storage you turn it to off so fuel will not run into engine, does it open or close the vent .
But thats what the valve at bottom of tank is for !
So what does it do ?
