Hi Everyone.
This is a good 250R forum! I have some input:
2StrOkeFReaK....for the woods, the 330 would be OK, but the motor does run hot. It might not like the slow, tight woods. I run a 120 over Wiseco Pro-Lite (~270cc) piston in a ported cylinder with a shaved head (250lbs compression), Rad Valve, PT pipe, 39PWK and K&N on VP C12. It rips a$$ in the woods. 4th gear wheelies with a crack of the throttle. At least it will save you the $1000 for the cylinder and you won't risk melting the motor.
The 330 is awsome though. I use it on my ice racer and it is fast. It pulls 15/33 gears without a blink. Last winter I embarassed a couple raptors, a banshee, trx and a yfz. They didn't expect the R to be that fast.
Sorry, the video files are big. I tried to compress them, but couldn't do it any more because the quality was dropping fast. Anyway in the first clip, I joined an ad-hoc race, and quickly passed the YFZ and Raptor, so I pulled over and waited for all the bikes to pass, then rode from the back of the pack so I could pass them all. It wasn't meant to brag, but they doubted the ATC, so I had to show them the power of the 330R.
2004 ice race
This next clip was with an FTZ 250 motor in 2002
ATC vs banshee...a good race
For the YFZ owner, I wouldn't tangle with a big bore R!

I was going to say something but nevermind.............All I got to say is..... Let's race!

Deathman - those pics rock!!
I love jumping like that - its the landing that is killer.
I need a new rear shock - every time I land I feel like the shock is going to poke me in the a$$ and my hands are going to be torn from their sockets.
But I still do it!
Hittin' pismo this weekend.. I'm ready to eat a few bikes for lunch - and dinner... Yee-Haw!
Long live the 'R

2StrOkeFReaK if you are going to spend the cash on a new cylinder get at least a 330 you wont regret it way more bottom end.

no never. dynos are all different anyway

yhaa yhaa yhaa if i coulda shoulda woulda

I agree with PlatinumDogg, post some pics man!!!!!

Deathman
You either got small brains or huge balls to jump like that on an atc!!! Those jumps are Sick!!
I like your swingarm, It must wheelie like mad being shorter. My 85 had some bolt on goodies and it would blow over on 4-5 shift. Cant imagine what a 330 would be like in a atc.
Posted by: 2StrOkeFReaK
thought you had an 88 swimgarm on it too, my bad, so its not -1".
Whats the 330 like from a reliability standpoint? I'm thinking of going that route on my 86. Ride 99% woods,
trails. I want reliable power. Bigger radiator???????
Posted by: 2StrOkeFReaK
Ya know Deathman,
My Dad just said the same thing. Plenty fast enough now, work on the suspension and brakes! Brakes are good enough now, but suspension is so expensive. Right now I dont see the value in it for a trail rider. I dont really jump the bike, never bottomed it. I would like my 86 to corner better, but dont want extra width. Was trying to
make up my mind on 265, 310, or 330. I want to be able to put real power to the ground down low and still be reliable enough to ride it hard and long for a whole season.

Did you start a new thread about your blown motor?
Sorry to hear you blew up, or, congrats you blew up!
I think I like wrenchin more than riding.
Good Luck Deathman
Get to gettin!!!!!!
( I'm watchin o.c.c) what morons

Thanks ATC 250 Rider and 344PV,
I dont know what I'm gonna do yet. I'm sellin my Zilla, I know I'll miss all the grunt and pull of that thing. I actually love riding it in the woods. Its just I've got 2 other 250R's and somthing has to go, sad to say its the Zilla.
It will be missed, just like my 85atc 250R.
No replacement for displacement!!

I will give your trike a ton of credit!!!!! I went riding over the weekend and one of the guys had a 2004 YFZ450. HOLY cow those have some real power. If your trike can hang with that.......Good Job!....but I would not try to hang with the YFZ on some wooded trails, you will get spanked if he knows how to ride. The guy I was riding with was near expert skill level and it was like a mini jet flying through the woods!img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

waynerod.....why don't you just get the shock rebiuld.....had mine done here in St. Louis for $76....good as new.

Long live Honda two strokes!

Can I get my 370 kit first?
Posted by: pimp250r
Hey 344PV, ever ran that 370 on a dyno?

I run a Unix system so I can't view Windows Media files until I go to work tomorrow.

Great story! I just bought a 86 ATC250R a couple weeks ago and it came with an extra set of wheels and tires. Stock wheels still have the original tires! I got to race all the new quads in the sand and my 250 beat quite a few (raptors, DS 650 etc.) There were some 450 running but form what I could see they had pipes and paddle tires. I could not get those guys. I need some paddles bad. The sand was really loose and I launched in 2nd gear. I would not start getting descent traction until 4th. I did notice I was catching up with some of the guys towards the end. Anyways after racing in the loose sand I bumped into a TRX450R with paddle tires in moist packed sand. Different story... We raced three times, I lost the first, won the second, and the third was basically a tie. I was running 20 in. shredders. Long live the ATC250R!

i wanna see some pics of your R ..

man..those video's are sweet..post some more!!!

nice, I've got alot or work done to my r, 330, esr pipe, 38 a/s, v-force, elka shock, lsr axle, 18" tires, and some more stuff. It hauls as, I give qauds a good run for their money on the mx track and can beat the stock 400's and sometimes can hang with yfz's, 450r's. the full race bikes blow me away. I've never dragged my bike, also blew my top end today so its gonna be atleast a week before i ride the 250r again.
Posted by: deathman53
the elka shock was well worth the money, I got a 88 year shock(origonally gonna be for a 88r I was gonna build), I got a durablue adj. 87-89 to make the shock work right, it cost me about $800, I really got to jump high to bottom the shock. I'd get one for the specific year you have, If I did it might work a bit better for my bike(the 88r has a shorter linkage, 1" shorter swingarm, and the top shock mount on the 88 is narrower, hence I put washers to fill the space, but still bend the top bolt and replace it every 3 months). Its a bear to keep the front on the ground, recently I got a partial short track kit and I'm gonna put the tank on, that should make the bike a bit more potent in turns. heres a few pics

now the bike has roll design pegs, 18" tires, the 330 isn't in the pic, also forgot the bike also has a cr 250 ignition.
Posted by: deathman53
I have a stock 86 swingarm on it, yes, I do ride with alot of balls. It doesn't wheelie too much, it will if I let it. I sit all the up on the tank so the front end stays down. the 330 is actualy more controllable than the 250, the 250 has alot snap. the 330 is smoother and keeps pulling, on the 250 the gears felt shorter and narrow and with the cr250 ignition stalled out alot, the 330 hardly stalls. Its a different type of ride
Posted by: deathman53
I blew the top end this weekend, I think it was my fault for not checking the coolant, but also I put 30 hrs on it and the prevous owner put about 25(didn't get it rebored when I got it). I used the stock radaitors with engine ice and a super cooler, didn't run too hot. Go for the 310 if you want more snap, as the 330 piston is heavy the bike doesn't rev fast and thats with a cr ignition. the 330 has a ton of torque so it may be the way to go in the woods. also, for the bolt on 330 you NEED a 87-89 rod and a new cluth basket and cluth would be a good idea as well as stiffer cltuh springs and ditch the stock carb and reeds to make it worth it. also a good pipe(not fmf or dg) would be a good idea. you have a trx, the stock radiator would be fine. if it were me, spend the money on suspension FIRST, then the motor. no point to going fast if the bike won't handle. I did suspension/handling first, then motor
Posted by: deathman53
and a 4 gallon tank wouldn't be a bad idea, the 330 drinks gas
Posted by: deathman53
I'm not happy about the top end, but oh well. I'm not shocking anymore at the track, the new guys stare and such, but the regulars say " noting new, he's here every sunday and gets nuttier". It gotta get some new pictures, hopefully when I get the 330 back I'll get some action pictures. How my suspension is the landing isn't bad at all. Every week I get " you should take those parts off and build a 250r quad" some people don't understand the three wheeler additction. Long live the atc's!!!!! heres a pic of my other atc with the partail short track kit and some rare magiazine atricles

I buy them on ebay. I have a few from 88 and 89, its suppising how the perception of trikes changed in 2 years, from praises to "the four wheeler counter part was much easier and more fun to ride, the trike felt tippy and difficult to ride", compare that to what one would have said in 86 "this trike carves corners like its on rails, handling was very good, none of our test riders had much difficulty riding it" those aren't real quotes, buts its the majority summed in a quote. I don't have the issue, but in 89 dirtwheels did a article comparing the 89 250r and 86 atc, from what I understand its a slaughter.

Nice job shutting him down. I have an 85 R with a few mods and I've spanked them all. It's a wonderful thing. There's always that one guy out there who talks the most smack and they're the funnest to shut down. Only my friend's modded Banshee runs with me. I'm sure a simple mod here or there and you'll take him.
Posted by: HMFIC
First off I would like to say that the only mod my R has is being bored .050 over and that is because it is 19 years old. The YFZ I raced had a couple of mods. He had the GYTR pipe, no air box lid with a K&N, and he said he had somthing done with the cams(retiming or somthing). I went to a yearly festival around here that is basically a big party in a pasture with live bands, crawdads, and beer. The make you sign a waiver and you can ride all you want to. The guy that puts on the festival is pretty cool and it was his son I was racing too. He kept going on about how fast his was and he let me ride it to. I have rode a 450r honda and loved it but I didn't really care for the YFZ. It's fast but I felt like I had to ride standing up the whole time just to get remotly comfortable. I am not a die hard honda fan either, I ride em all. So I went over to see if he wanted to run and we did. We must have raced accross a pasture 1/2 mile long. He got me about 2 links off the line and I was catching him the whole way. I finished about 1/2 a link behing. He was all, yeah I beat ur ass, and he shut up quickly when I made one statement infront of all of his buddies. I said, after finacing you paid $8,000 for yours, I paid $800 for mine and yours is the newest high tech peice of equipment made and mine is 19 years old and was made before the first racing quad ever was, this has gotta suck for you to know if I bolted a $250 dollar pipe on that I would spank your ass. He didn't even race anymore that night. I think he was afraid I would beat him if we raced again. I have a fast banshee but it is just more fun spanking quads on a trike. That was the only person to beat me and I raced a Z400, a couple of 400ex's, and even a banshee that was bone stock and I beat em all. Long live the R!!!!!

I have a buddy with a digital camera. I will get him to take some off my R and my shee. Give me a couple of days. Deathman. Is that shock worth the money. Mine needs a rebuild and I am thinking about just hooking it up with a new aftermarket unit. I will probably just get a works or somthing though. I don't jump 80ft. triples so one of them should do just fine.
Posted by: HMFIC
I don't think that I am going to moddify my R. I have a shee with a 404 big bore kit. CT porting for bottom and mid, Pro design cool head with 20cc domes, delta v-force II reeds, 30mm carbs, toomy 2 into 1 air filter, T5 pipes, Hinson basket, KG clutch's, lots of billet, inline water cooler's, high flow water pump impeller, douglas 10in wheels all the way around with bandit fronts and kenda rears, black powder coated frame, swingarm, and control arms, flip-flop paint, custom seat cover, and the list goes on. I have put countless dollars in it and when I get ready to sell it I might get $500 more than I paid for it. It's a great bike though and the way the motor is set up it is actually great for trails. But, when you beat some one with it you just don't feel the same as if you beat them on a stock trike. That's why I didn't even carry my shee to the festival. No one would have stood a chance there and no one would have wanted to race me either. I ride my R 10 times as much as my shee. I love that trike and I don't ever plan on parting with it. I think I am going to sell my shee on ebay and get a new 450r. I can just leave it stock and spank people with it too.
Posted by: HMFIC
Mine had a 4 gallon tank on it when I bought but I sold it on ebay and made enough of of it to buy a stock one. That thing was ugly dude. The more that I think about it I may get a ESR ATC5 pipe for it and probably a cool head and some reeds. I bet it would make it a real power house then. But first things first. I need a good rear shock. Mine is starting to bottom out on the small jumps i take.
Posted by: HMFIC
I used to have a 85 Cr500R but I traded it for a road bike. I bought it when I lived in MO for $200 bucks because the guy thought the tranny was shot and all that was wrong with it was a lose shifter. I wish I still had it, that way, I could bolt that motor to my trike and blow all you guys away! lol
Posted by: HMFIC
That engine was sick man. I can't even imagine what it would be like on a trike. you know what they say, hind sight is 20/20 and it sucks.
Posted by: HMFIC
Wher can I get some of those old articles. I would kill for some. I am a 3-wheeler addict. You are my idol lol.

R's rule anyway.
