Sounds like an early ATC250R to me.

The Yam 125 & 175 looks nothing like a TriZ and both have a rear disc brake and not drum....so that eliminates it being a Yamaha period.

even yamaha blaster's (which r 2-strokes) are still air cooled

I think that all the comapnys did. Its prolly a yamaha if it looks like the one that you have now.

yeah a friend of mine has a little yamaha 125 air cooled 2-stroke 3-wheeler

Thats how all the older ( air cooled) 250r's were, or at least my 84 is that way.

So I'm on my way home and spot a 3wheeler w/ a 2-stroke pipe and it kinda looks like my tri-z. I stop to check it out, but it's behind a fence w/ dogs. So I look it over and notice it's air-cooled, looks like it has drum brakes front and back. The guy has spray painted the fenders blue so I had no idea what it was....

So Yamaha did eh....

It's weird though, cause the exhaust was on the left side (if you were sitting on it, the exhaust would be by your left leg)

ahh, so it could be a 250r
