1) may I strongly suggest....get the "C" clamp style valve spring compressor
2) to lap the valves in all you need is valve lapping compound, and the tool looks like a stick with two suction cups on the ends, you should be able to pick the stuff up at any parts store(@$8)
A) word of advice.....put a small amount of lapping compound on the valve on the seat angle, seat the valve, with the suction cup stuck to the valve, spin it between your two hands(like you are making a boyscout fire with sticks) then lift the valve turn 90 deg, and do it again, and again, until you have a nice clean scuff on the valve seat and valve angle. (the lapping compound I use is from NAPA and is in a jell form)(lapping compound is a abrassive, remove ALL of it! )
3)Timing chain and GUIDES, are a great idea!
4)All of the gasket kits I have purchased never include seals, so ckeck into it when you buy your stuff.
5) let the manual be your friend img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

Who told you that? 90% of the people in here learned by looking at a book and digging in. If you did not live so far away, I would rebuild it for you for free and show you everthing! If you rebuild it yourself you will have a better idea on how everthing works .....and respect it. my 5 cents worth

The forks in the tranny are easy......Here are some pointers...
1) work on a clean large workbench.
2) Get a good book for your exact engine. I like my 'Clymer'
3) Keep track of your spacers.....The trans has quite a few but they are easy to keep track of
4) don't tear anything apart you do not need to...you will know what I mean when you read the book
5) replace the worn parts!!!!! alot of people just say itll be ok for now.....While you have it apart...fix it so you will not have to do it for another 20 years!
6)Lay your parts out in order you take them off
7) put it back together CLEAN!!!!!!!
8) Play loud music (ooops that is just me!)

I got my manual off e-bay for $12us brand new. My book is set up all in Ft.lbs.
You will need a set of feeler gages ( to set the valves)
Other than that you sound as though you have it under control!

If you have any questions you can PM me or I will give you my e-mail if you want it.

The book will lay out the timing very easy!!!!! and to send a PM just click on the littlepad-lock on my post...

You have to learn somehow. img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0"> how is the rest of the project going?

Sounds great. You are putting a lot of work into it, BUT it will be all worth it in the end. I'm glad you decided to do it yourself...Like mrfixit said, it gives you bragging rights!!!! If you think about it get some pictures of it while you are working on it. We all love to see a trike in progress and then seeing the finished project. Most of us in the 3-wheeler forum are like the people in a model "T" club.......we love to see the old things restored. They are getting slim, so restoring them helps bring them backimg src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

Ok i'm in the process of rebuilding my whole trike right now i'm doing the chasis first then i'm gonna do the engine, i have a good amount of basic tools plus i'm always buying more every chance i get but what i'm wondering is what special tools am i gonna need to rebuild the engine on my bike,i never rebuilt a trike engine before but i've done lawnmowers back in high school, the reason i wanna do this myself along with the help of the clymer manual is cause i wanna learn and i figure what better way then building my own trike,i know i'm gonna need a ring compressor and a piston ring installer andvalve spring compressor, now what i want to know is what other tools do i need is there a special tool to lap the valves etc,any info will be appreciated, also any tips or tricks to make this job easier would be great to know too, feel free too post anything that may help me through out this process.

I forgot to mention what i'll be doing to the engine is putting a whole new topend rebuild kit, new fork and shaft in the transmission and all new gaskets,i'm also gonna change the timing chain and tensioner while i'm in there also the bike is a 1985 Yamaha YTM 225 Dr definatly worth the money and work in my opinion. Thanks in advance,Rob

Thanks very much for the advice.

Posted by: rob0781

anyone else have any suggesstions?

Posted by: rob0781

i'm just gonna pay someone to rebuild it cause i was told unless i done this job before i'll ruin my engine for sure no matter what if i attemt to do it myself..

Posted by: rob0781

i still may try it myself i'm just worried about ruining my engine, plus i have over $700 in parts for the engine and transmission i don't wanna ruin any,i also need the replace the forks in my tranny is this a big job and am i gonna get stuck on since it will be my first time doing this?

Posted by: rob0781

yeah thats the manual i'm gonna buy(the clymer) i priced it,it is $40 but from what i been hearing it's worth it,now i'm gonna need a torque wrench so i will be buying one am i gonna need a torque wrench that is inch pounds or foot pounds? Also setting the timing i have no idea how to do this, also just to help me get in the right direction can you list me some tools i'm gonna need,I know i'll need a valvle spring compressor and a piston ring compressor i have a set of metric sockets, deep sockets and hex keys and alot od other tool wrenches etc(i been buyin all my tools metric cause i noticed most atv's are metric)if theres anything i missed please let me know,i just want to get everything i need before i tear into the engine the engine is sitting on my workbench now cause i don't wanna open it till i get my parts in,right now i'm concentrating on the chasis, that parts is comming along very well,so anymore info on the questions i posted would be sweet....thanks

Posted by: rob0781

what about setting the timing? Also how do you send a pm i don't see an option.

Posted by: rob0781

Ok thanks..

Posted by: rob0781

Well i think i am going to buy all the tools i'm missing for this job and take my time and learn and do it myself, the way i figure you gotta learn somehow and somewhere, plus thrashandcrashuntilitstrash also motivated me a bit more most people i asked about me doing this myself said ohhh your gonna open it up and open the tranny and gears and all these little peices are gonna go flying and your gonna ruin your engine ,i so i'm just not gonna tell anyone i know and do it in my shed then they'll find out when i go out riding and my yamaha has a fresh rebuild.

Posted by: rob0781

Well i bought the clymers manual today so i hope that helps me out ,seems to have a lot of info in it,i'm gonna have to sit down and read it from front to back..

Posted by: rob0781

Thanks for the info, another update on my axles,i found out tonight there left handed threads that would be why i broke 3 wrenches trying to loosen the ring nut,i was trying to tighten them not knowing it.lol

Posted by: rob0781

everything else is coming along pretty good,i got the frame all sanded ,primed and painted, and i will be doing all the plastics this weekend,i also bought a bench grinder and put a wire wheel on one side and thats been helping alot,it cleans smaller parts and screws and bolts and makes them look brand new again so that was definatly a good investment, now i just need to work on getting the filler screw out in the rearend, after that i wanna sand and paint the rearend and swing arm then i will reassemble the chasis with new bearing all around ,then the hard part will follow the engine and transmission, then after that i'll be ready to bolt it up get a new sticker kit and ride...

Posted by: rob0781

yeah i'll be sure to get some pics,i can't get a befroe pic since it's in peices but i can get some pics of it along the way and the finished product,if i can't get a digi cam in time i'll be sure to buy a few rolls of film for the ole 35mm camera and scan some pics on here.. I think i'll beable to complete this project without too many major problems and if this one goes good i'll be definatly buying another project soon after this one is done,as much as i'd love to be out riding my trike i am having a ton of fun rebuilding the whole thing,at least when i get my next project afterwards,i'll have my freshly built yamaha to ride still ,so then it'll be the best of both worlds..

Hey Rob,

You might want to check into a flywheel puller and have a good set of Metric tools (sockets and allen wrenches). Possibly some circlip removers. Thats some of the tools that come to mind but there are probably a few more. Most importantly have fun.

ok rob..just a few words of wisdom..never..never...tell yourself..your going to ruin yer engine..lol..look at it this way..if it wasn't bad off now..then why are you tearing into to it huh ?..lol..second..so far..i've rebuilt 3 3-wheelers..and one 4 wheeler..and best part I'VE NEVER READ ONE DAMN CLYMER BOOK !..LOL.you can always learn ..by DOING !..not doing..wont teach you one thing.check this out..i've restored 2 '82 honda 200e, 1 '83 honda 200e..and i'm working on my honda '84 200es..i can't tell you what i've learned by openning a tool box..and digging in..but..what i can tell you is..what ever you do..always..AND I MEAN ALWAYS..TAKE YOUR TIME..DONT RUSH IT...FIX IT SLOW AND RIGHT..BEATS THE CRAP OUT OUT FAST..AND WRONG..SO..go slow..and study each and every part you get to unbolt..cause..the next time you take one down to the frame..you will know what to do..AND WHAT NOT TO DO !..know matter what you decide to do..i've always considered it a great pride..and pleasure..fixing something..that once was dead..lol..thats the onething you must do..have fun..enjoy yourself..when yer done..pat yerself on the back..AND SAY..HEY..WHAT A DAMN GREAT JOB I'VE DONE ..BEST PART IS..IT RUNS !!!!

oh..in case you haven't done it yet..you set the timming by the marking's on the crank..unscrew the vew cap on the left top side of your engine..you will see an arrow pointing to the middle of your crank...pull the starter rope VERYYYYYYYY SLOWLY until you will see to letters roll around..one will be a ( F )...and the other will be a ( T )..line up the ( T )..on the arrow..make sure your piston is at top dead center..stick a straw down the spark plug hole..becare not to drop a short one down in it..lol..if it's at top dead center..you should be able to tell as soon as you ease it down in it..now..over on the left hand side of your motor..you should see a round looking with 2 screws in it..it should have C.D.I on it ?..thats your pickup coil and timming, take the cover off..you will see a thing with wires attached to it..thats you pick up ..the thing in the middle that goes around..must be facing a bolt that has an circle on it..with a bolt by it ?..that needs to be lined up with a notch at the top of the head..now..once you get everything lined up..fasten everything down..be careful not to turn the crankshaft..otherwise..yu'll need to start all over..if you get all this down..turn the key..hit the start button..if all was done right..she should purr like a brandnew kitten !..
