I remember in the early seventies my dad was telling me that the ATC90 would float. I believe if it is light enough and the tires are big enough it will float. I can not picture a typical ATC250r floating upright easily, but I can picture an atc90 with stock baloon tires floating.

Some of the smaller models with the big balloon tires definatly would float. I used to float my Kawa 110 across streams all the time. I would just jump off and float it to the other side. It didn't work to well if you were on it. The later big reds were to heavy to float....the best you could do was get the front tire floating.

This reminds me of a story my dad told me a couple years ago. Someone was wondering if their ATC 250R would float, one fellow sarcastically told him yeah, it will. Anywho, this assclown ramped a lake damn and his wheeler sank to the bottom.

In theory, if you air the tires up, way up, it should float. I'm thinking maybe 20-30 psi???
It probably won't float right side up though.

When my old 185s had stock tires it would float with me (I was 100 pound kid back in '81) on it.

If it's only 50 wide and you are on a 200x, I would just gun it and skim across the top.

i fell through a pond (winter) on a blaster and it floated upright but it would have flipped over if the ice wasnr there

Every 3-wheeler I've seen dunked ended up floating upside down. LOL

Quads are too heavy......They sink.

I tried that in my friends pond with an 84 250r. Well it floated....upside down. If you're going to try it, do it in a very shallow place. It's not like you can throw paddle tires on the thing and use it like a jet ski. But, if you do....please have someone take video or pictures of it!!!

My 85 big red floats. As long as you keep forward momentum. The bike was designed to have the air intake come through the frame by the front bars. I was in about 5 feet of water and had no problem at all - felt like driving a boat. I also wa going too fast in the trails about 2 months ago and blasted over a cliff into a river. I jumped off mid-air and the bike went 'splash' it rolled sideways and stayed afloat until I could wade up to it and pull it out... winched it to the top of the hill (about 1 hr later) let it sit for 5 mins and she fired right up! Can't beat a Honda....

Years ago I worked with a guy who had a honda 3 wheeler, don't remenber what size. Him and his brother broke thru the ice while fishing. He said it floated.

The front end of the 200x WILL NOT float! The back end WILL and thats a bad combination!

Trust me I found out the hard way!

All the atc's with the bigger balloon tires all around will float.

abilty to float is based on simple principles of water displacement, i cant see that an atc would actualy float cos you need to displace a volume of water equal in weight to the wheeler, your wheels just arnt big enough to do that,

you could probably do a nice job of aquaplainig tho,

i would never have thought it possable, i stand corrected,

yea, my dad used to float his trike down the river and get out. down in the bottoms.....You would really have to have huge tires like he did, and run a vaccuum hose from the intake and exhaust. jake

buy some giant balloon tires and stick em on that 185, i bet it will work. If not, you still have a 250sximg src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0">img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0">img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif" border="0">img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-cool.gif" border="0">

From my experiance, an ATC110 floats pretty good without someone on it, the '84 250r just floats enought to get bad traction until the motor drowns and a Tri-Z 250 floats upside down with the tires just breaking the surface, don't try that one at home.

I have a 83 185s,85 250sx wondering if they float? Iheard years ago that they floated.

one day i was doing donuts on teh lake with my atc 110 and i fell throught the ice. luckly i was close to shore. TWO DAYS later i went to fish it out and it was floting uprite. i pulled it out with a rope started it up and drove it to the garage

Thank you to all that posted there stories, I have learned!!!!!!!!!! This spring I am going to try a new place to ride; I have to cross a river to get to it. The river is about 50' wide and about 10" deep with the water moving sorta slow. My riding buddy uses a dirt bike and I am goin to let him go first and tie off a rope JUST IN CASE!!!!! I do not want to have to post a horror story here in the spring

i had a 125 trike (honda) and it floated with me on it up-right. but i was like 10 and weighed like 70-80lbs

I don't know about that particular 3 wheeler. but i know the old "BIG RED" do. But there is only one way to find out

I had a Honda 110 and and I believe it was a 200 Yamaha 3 wheeler could of been a 185 though, still have nitemares from the time I tried to cross a river on it and guess what it floated, right out from under me and down the river and got snagged in a log jamb. Almost drowned in river while trying to get a rope attached to it and get back to shore. As for the 110 it would also float, I just did not take it across anything but beaver ponds as I was a little gun shy of rivers. After that bad incident and also rolling it down a mountain when the brake cable snapped I was able to talk my wife into letting me by a King Quad, of course she was picking large chunks of shale and dirt out of my face so it was not hard to do. But yes indeed they do float and I only had about 5 to 6 pounds in each tire, I do not think you could get 30 pounds into the tire without it blowing up. The rolling and almost drowning happened on the same trip. AlaskaBoy.

Hate to bust your bubble Chris142, but you said quads do not float. Well the 95 King Quad I had floats just fine, along as it is in stock form. It will not float with rider after installing a winchbumper and winch, I have floated many a beaver pond that way. Even after the install of the winch and bumper the wheeler will float without me on it I took a wrong turn one evening and ended up crossing the wrong end of a pond and it was alot deeper then I imagined and the quad sucked water and it sank, but when I jumped off it came back to the surface and I swam and pulled the quad to the other side. Of course it sucked too much water in it and would not start so it was a very cold tow job{May black bear hunt} back to the truck. But you will find out some quads will float in certain situations just like 3 wheelers but I would not suggest running out to see if your quad will float as it could get expensive, I found out by accident and took advantage of it before I added heavy accessories to it.AlaskaBoy.
