Don't know about a CR230 but I guarantee that you will have no problem keeping up with an XR200 on a CR85.

If you know how to drive a wheeler, by all means, get that. For the dirt bike, is it a CR 80 or 85. Either way, they are getting smaller and smaller size wise, so you need to think about the future when you get bigger.
Another thing you could do is tell me where this local dealer is. BR>

no such thing as a cr230. cr250.yes, but no the cr85 will not stay with a cr250.

The old air cooled r's are really cool. Very easy to work on also. Just remember tho, that thing will be FAST. Tons of parts out there so you should be able to fix it up pretty easily.

My little bro had a 230rf (still have the bike - but he's riddin' his little 50 in the sky now).
Generally, he could keep up with the cr85's, and when it got rough he could take them (a bit better suspension on the 230's - its a bigger machine).
But in a flat out race, the cr's hit the powerband and its all over.
Now in a race with an 84' R... The little cr may be a good challenge - for the first few gears. But once you hit 5th, the ATC would more than likely take it. However - when you hit the rough, the suspension on the 84's isn't the greatest and the cr would definately be superior.
Then again - its sort of like comparing oranges and lemons..

I have a 1980 CR80r that is six-speed, its very fast.. i bored it .020 over and put a weico piston in it and had the head cleaned up.. its a bat out of hell!! i weigh 300 lbs and it will ride wheelies down the street in every gear once it hits the powerband, I can keep up with a Cr125 with the 125 in 5th gear at wide open throttle

I agree with the replies here. If you are big enough to ride the R, then you will probably want to look into at least a 125. I personally like bikes better, but nothin gets sideways like the 250r.
