Get the welder out.

I unloaded my $200 Running 1986 Big red 250 off my truck and jumped on it. I hit the kick start and put it in gear I started to go and when I went to shift from first to second the shift lever kind of broke free and flew off the thing that sticks out (New to bikes I don't know what that is called) upon inspection the shift lever is cracked where the (missing) bolt goes through and the shaft that sticks out is completely stripped. I understand there are supposed to be splines.

I don't have a clue what to so. The bike runs good even though it is ugly as hell. New plastic and a repainted tank was going to fix that but not if I can't even get it to shift

what should I do?

thanks, Mike

welded and back riding- I figure that I would have to replace the shaft anyways so if it breaks again it's not a big deal

Thanks
