Plenty of 4 stroke racers, and more to come.
The TRX90 is the most common right now. The Kymco is doing well in the GNC's.
The 4 stroke auto shifters are right there depending on the rider.
Year before last, the TRX owners got all excited cuz a kid was doing well. They seem fast but unreliable once bored/stroked to 125cc's.
Last year and this year it's a 2 stroke still out front.

ok typhoon story. the prototype was built by kenny vaughn of dallas texas owner of k-fab. kenny is a top fabricator and even builds race car frames. the four stroke is a honda copy. billy holt of wrh racing was also involved in the building of this quad and is building motor upgrades as i type this. this will be the quad to beat next year. many many race parts already on it that you dont have to spend you hard earned cash on upgrading. 42 inches wide, big time suspension travel, aluminum rims with the tires most of use for race minis, nerf bars and more. my son has raced for 4 years, he races a highly modded eton viper stroker. the hondas cant touch him out of the gate but after that he has to work hard to keep in front of them. the 4 stroke power is so much smoother. how do i know all of this. i have been to xtreme in arkansas 3 times with billy holt when this quad was in the prototype stages and have been to kenny's shop in dallas 3 times. if my son wasnt at the stage where i am having to up him to a 300ex the typhoon would be in my shop right now being fine tuned for racing.

Any questions you have regarding mini quads (2-stroke vs. 4-stroke) can be answered by a very reputable company call "Hetrick Racing." Rich knows everything there is to know about mini quads. They are very nice people there. Give them a call - their opinion is a valued one! If you race, you have probably heard of them. If not, you should definately contact them. Rich Hetrick specializes in the modifications of big and mini quads. www.hetrickracing.com

With just a few modifications (from Hetrick Racing) to my daughter's Predator 90, she has been taking the holeshot every time. That is even against other quads with mods. She lost her first holeshot this weekend. It was to a Honda TRX 90 that had mega mods done by Hetrick Racing. I am not sure what mods were done, but he had one fast machine!

Although (with the exception to the TRX mentioned above) the 4 strokes usually lack power in the holeshot, they seem to do just fine keeping up during the race. It is going to depend on how good the rider is. If your child is an excellent rider, he will do good on any machine. Although for some riders (like my daughter) holeshot really counts! The lack of 4-stroke power in the holeshot can be corrected by getting some modifications (like the quad mentioned above.) If that is something you would consider, I highly recommend Hetrick Racing to do the job (or provide the recommendations and parts.)

Good luck!

I'm curious as to how the 90cc 4 strokes fare in racing. I know cc for cc a 2 stroke will make more power but with the demise of 2 strokes right around the corner, one company is now only building 4 stroke quads. Their new product looks very intriguing. Right out of the box, it is 42" wide and 43" wheel base, with 8" travel front and back. Only problem is that it is available only as a 4 stroke. Does anybody here currently race a 4 stroke (TRX 90 maybe?) and how do they keep up with the 2 strokes? I'm thinking with a better chassis and the ability to shift gears, maybe the new bike will have a chance but if the bike has no chance of competing, I'll go with the DRX90 and forget about it.

So a 90 4 stroke bored to 125cc can compete against the 90cc 2 strokes? What about a stock 125 4 stroke? Can it compete in the same class? My son is an aggressive rider and seems talented and has expressed a sincere desire to race. He races against every kid he can whenever and where ever we ride. He was able to out-ride much older kids on 110cc 4 strokes with his tweaked LT50 on the track and even gave a kid who claimed to race his Polaris 90 (he had full race gear and appropriate numbering on his quad) a very hard time that was on the track as well (obviously the 90 out-powered the 50 eventually but my son kept so much speed through the corners and across the whoops the Polaris really had to work to get by him). He's ready to step up and I don't want to buy something that is going to disappoint. The Xtreme Typhoon has the suspension the DRX90 doesn't and handling, in my opinion, is more important than hp to a good degree. I've seen many of your posts on this board and you appear to be well versed with the racing scene.

I've already seen the quad by Xtreme on the web. It is called the Typhoon and is going to be available in 70, 90 and 125 cc versions. This is the quad that caused me to start this thread. As you said, it has all the goodies; double wishbone front suspension, premium shocks, 8" travel front and back, doesn't cost $7,000.00. But, all the handling in the world won't help if there isn't some hp to get things moving. So, therein lies my question; will the Typhoon make enough hp that the suspension will make up the difference or should I stay with a 2 stroke? And if indeed handling IS more important, which Typhoon should I buy to race against the 90 2 strokes; the 90 and modify it like they do with the TRX90 or the 125? Will they allow 125 4 strokes to compete against 90 2 strokes?

Kind of wished I had seen your post a little bit earlier. I would have liked to have seen that information about 4 strokes. It's something I knew but never really thought about it in regards to my son (why I ride a Raptor rather than a Banshee). I was nearly sold on the idea of the Typhoon but pulled the trigger on an Apex MX90 after I found out the tracks we will be racing at have a 16 y.o. age limit for any quad 110cc or larger, no exceptions. I guess I was stuck on the premise that cc for cc, a 2-stroke will make more power and didn't think that a 90 4 stroke would be competitive against a 90 2 stroke. Plus, since he is new to organized racing, I didn't want him to have to think about rules, manuevering around other competitors, strategy and trying to pick the right gear all at the same time. I decided to stick with a CVT until he is a little more seasoned at racing. Definitely something to consider after he is ready to move on from here. Since you race Vipers on a regional level, how do the Apex bikes fare on the circuit? From what I understand, basically the same motor as a Viper 90, except with the liquid cooled cylinder.
