Gentlemen,
After just completing the cleaning of the LT80's carb and having such great results, I was very disappointed yesterday when I could not take my son to the local mx track because his machine would not start.
I just had the battery fluid topped and had it charged. However, the machine turned over very slowly. This has been the case on this machine since I've owned it. Even with a brand new battery it will turn very slowly, usually requiring a jump start to fire it up.
I know many of you are already thinking pull-start and I'll get there soon enough, I'm just not in the position to drop nearly $100 on it yet.
Yesterday, the quad turned over slowly as usually, but got slower and slower. Even with a jump start, it wouldn't not fire and only turned slower until it would not turn over at all. Only the solenoid would click.
The starter was smoking hot to the touch so I figure it's time to look into that. After an exercise in futility, I finally removed it, disassembled it and cleaned it.
HOWEVER, there is a piece missing, which explains why the starter was always so noisy.
In the 'bullet-nose' end of the starter where the gear aperture is, there is supposed to either a bushing or a bearing to carry the engagement gear. It has a bronze bushing at the end where the stator gear interlocks with the drive gear. However, at the tip, right in the end of the 'bullet-nose', there is nothing. The gears flop around in there like crazy.
It appears there may have been a needle bearing in there at one point, but it could have been a straight bushing (bronze, I would assume). The I.D. is about .312 and the O.D. is about .473 (inch dimensions). Anyone know which it is? I can order whichever I need and modify it if need be (alter OD or ID, for instance), but I want to do this ONCE.
Thanks
