I've never thought of looking for light thru the oil injection. It's small! Most usually block off the oil injection and run pre-mix.
Choke: If the spring was cut, I wonder if it would pop up and down during riding? If so that wouldn't be good. The choke assembly does unscrew out, maybe you can figure out something wrong in there.
Your problem sounds like a plugged main jet.

Hi guys,

I've just joined this forum, but have...so far...found much of the information here to be invaluable as I've been browsing for awhile. There is much to learn about the venerable LT80 on this forum!

I have been plagued by the popular LT80 open-throttle bog. According to advice on this forum, I have removed the carb and cleaned it since I had the top end redone last fall and didn't figure it to be that. Apparently, I did not clean the carb enough...

I fired it up and sill had the same bog problem. Once it reaches a certain rpm it simply dies. Well, if you let off the throttle, it will idle, but if you stay on it, it will die. I disconnected the airbox and the machine ran up and did NOT have the bog problem. While running, I reconnected the airbox and guhhhh...bog time! Hmmm...maybe a dead rat in the airbox restricting airflow?

Further investigation after removing the airbox proved otherwise as I found nothing restrictive whatsoever in the airbox or hoses. I just cleaned the filter tonight (although I find it hard to believe a filter, no matter how dirty, would have such a drastic impact).

I did not clean the float needle, but am already working on that remedy as I have it completely disassembled and will clean it tomorrow.

Finally, my questions:

1) The original oil-injection is still connected. Should I be able to see light through the oil 'jet' on the back/left side of the carb? This is the brass connection where the hose coming from the oil pump connects to the carb and extends into the ventrium (sp?). Currently, I cannot see light through it, but maybe I'm not supposed to? Is there a diaphragm in there or maybe a valve?

2) The choke will not stay in the 'up' (choked) position. After disassembly, it seems that whatever detent is supposed to hold it there has simply worn out and will not. This makes it a pain in the butt to start cold. Should I simply remove the spring? Suggestions? I can't even see how to disassembly it or I'd do so and cut the detent deeper (if I thought that would work).

LT (and others who can benefit),

As I mentioned before, I took this forums advice on cleaning the carb to eliminate this bogging. However, it didn't seem to work which is why I started this thread, but while waiting for some advice I begrudgingly attempted it again (my huge hands have a hard time fitting in that little area).

This time, however, I took the carb completely apart whereas I only removed the two jets the first time. Once disassembled and bagged, I took it to the local dealer and they dipped it in their tank for a good hour or so. Man, what a difference! I did other things as well such as replace the old-looking injection oil, cleaned the airbox & filter, blew out hoses with the compressor and that sort of thing. However, I am absolutely positive that cleaning the carb was the cure.

The dealer owner mentioned that when it ran so well when I removed the airbox indicated that the jets were actually flooding the carb (more air was allowed into the carb w/the airbox off, so it was able to keep up w/the amount of fuel). I believe he said that the pilot jet was probably clogged forcing the main jet to pump too much fuel in too early.

Anyway, if you ever doubted that simply cleaning the carb would eliminate your 'bog' problem, give it a try, you'll like the results. Just be thorough and get everything. Many do it themselves and it's only the cost of a can of carb cleaner. Even taking it to the dealer was only $25, and money well spent I might add.

Now I get to (HAVE to) put that throttle-limiter screw back in!!
