Three years old is very young for a quad rider. Not that some can't do it, but most kids that age do not have the ability to steer, throttle and brake. In any event, you are looking at a 50 max size.

GET HIM A LEM!!!!
oh wait i dont want to start that again lol
look for a 50cc bike that fits him theres a kasea 50 thats small kinda like the power wheels atv size and it has enough power to pull you around
Iv seen Raptor720 buzzing his stock one around the pits at every race( normally in a wheelie)

I bought my son a LT-A50 for his 3rd birthday. We live on a mountain, and learning to ride a bike on anything but flat ground is quite difficult, so he was on the quad before he could ride a bicycle. His Power Wheels quad and Jeep stripped out the plastic gears just trying to go around the house (I studded the tires for traction), so that finalized it.

A couple points, or just opinions:
-You should be in good enough shape to run right behind him the entire time for several months. Just when you think he has it down, something will distract him and he'll eat a fence. Since the factory LT-A50 is really slow, that wasn't as hard as it sounds. Btw- the factory tether didn't work once, so I learned right away to stay close enough to grab the back bar. I'd be very leery of a radio-controlled kill switch (and I'm in the radio business).
-You'll need to perform many, many drills to get him accustomed to grabbing for the brakes. If your son does not take directions well, consider the consequences.
-The biggest issue I had was my son being distracted. At that age, everything in the world is really interesting, and worth focusing on regardless of what tree is right in the way. At almost 5, my son still will get distracted on occasion, but it's not the same kind of issue. At 3, they'll completely forget that they're riding along.
-At this age, I don't think a foot brake is of any concern. If anything, having the brakes in visual range at all times might be preferable for a 3 year old.
-I can't emphasize enough having all the proper riding gear. Helmet, gloves, long pants, long-sleeve shirt, boots, chest protector. I really like using knee pads too.
-Don't be shocked if he'd rather play with dirt than ride in it.

I gotta' disagree with you there.

Whether they crash on 2 or 4 wheels (and they will of course crash), there's going to be respect learned. Training wheels on a dirt bike just make no sense to me at all. High center of gravity, easy to flop it over, and incorrect style of turning for that style of machine.

My son's legs are so short that he can barely touch on a PW50, and he's almost 5. The key is how the parent uses the various machines or toys as learning tools.

Motorcycles teach respect...quads don't

I start him on a pw50 or an xr50 if he is a little taller...
training wheells can be installed on either allowing the rider to build confidence in himself

Get him a Raptor, then he can beat that 12 year old at Glamis. On second thought, get him a tricycle. Let him learn some basics before you start putting him on something with a motor. If he gets hurt young you could scare him away from riding for life. JMO

if it doesnt have to be a quad manco makes a 49cc jeep that is great for the little guys ,my son got his at 21/2 there is no brake pedal ,the brake automatically applies as you let off the gas,it has a throttle limiter, and a remote tether, plus its two seater with seat beltsif you have another child ,similar to the power wheels but larger and gas powered and i believe i paid like 749.00 for the one we had..just another option

you could try mancos site ,i dont have a digital camera i spend all my money on toys for the kids(my son and myself)

The minimum age in having a motor under a kids legs is their ability to control the unit and your personal comfort zone. I seen kids at age 5 control their quad better then some 12 year olds, and I've seen a few 5 year old kids do many face plants. Yes, sideways or into the handle bars. In our family, age 8 and up is our minimum age limit. In some families, age 5 and up is their limit. Age 3 sounds way too young for me.

If you do get a little 40 cc or 50 cc mini-quad your your kid, ensure he/she can control it, and you have a remote kill switch for it. A 2 way radio headset, like they us in racing, will also help.

Good luck...

i just bought my just about 4 yr old a drr 50 & he handles it just fine the thing with the drr & i imagine all of the 50's you can turn them down to where they barely move just be careful not to tell the dealer how old your kid is because most dealers will not sell tem to you if they know someone under six will be riding it

In my opinion, a kid should be able to ride a bike without help (training wheels, parents, etc..) well before putting them on anything with a motor. Trust me, seeing your kid wreck and get hurt for the first time will make you question your decision for buying them wheels no matter how old they are. My 7 year old has been riding for 2 years on an 80. He was able to ride his bike at age 3 very well. But he still scares me to death on his quad. I also don't let my boys ride unless I'm with them. I don't always ride, but they are within eye sight. It may not sound like much, but they know I'm watching and they know if they do somthing stupid I'll see it and they will have to take a break.

My son started racing at age 4, He is big for his size since i am 6 foot 5 and my wife is 6 foot. My best friend put his two year old on an lem condor. The only thing that stinks is that when they out grow it there are no major mods to do to make it last longer for the size. What we do is put a tie down on the handle bar and go to the nerf bar so that the wheel is turned, we just let it idle and hold onto the kill tether and try not to get to dizzy. When he got to the point he was trying to turn the bars to go straight we gave him a little more slack to go around some more. This seemed to work well for us and another friend of ours whos twin boys used to be tops in the nation on quads. Obviously you could do this with any quad so do your research on all quads from suspension to handling to preformance upgrades down the road. Best of luck and hopefully you will be exstatic when he goes on his own and you can sit and watch without running behind, because riding with daddy is alot different than look at me dad I am doing it on my own and when he looks at you in appreciation....... O crud there is a tree

Hello,
My son is going to turn 3 in feb. I want to get him a quad. He has mastered his powerwheels jeep and can drive me around the yard on my warrior in 1st gear. He just isn't strong enough to turn the bars!

So, I think he can master the throttle and steering OK, but the braking scares me. THe only youth atv I have seen with a foot brake is the Kazuma meercat. It seems to be a decent bike for the price, but from looking at this forum it seems like a gamble on quality.

At what age did you guys get your kids on quads?

Any other advice is great.

Thanks
