Im going to change my oil, is there a drain hole on the bottom of the motor for the crank case? If not where does the oil drain out at?

If I remember right it's toward the right side up thru a hole in the skid plate.

 

After you drain the oil reservoir on the 500 motor there will still be just over a cup of oil left in the crankcase. If you pay a dealer to change your oil, 99% of them will not drain the case. In fact, many dealer wrenches don’t even know there’s a drain plug on the case. It’s there, but it’s a mother to get at and even worse to get back in.

Here’s what I do after many years of oil changes on 500s. Drain the oil from the reservoir and remove the oil filter. Once the oil stops dripping, with the plug still out, oil pan still underneath, and the ignition switch OFF, I pull on the recoil starter about a half dozen times. Do this at five minute intervals over a fifteen to twenty minute period (3-4 times) and you’ll “purge” the crankcase of oil without the hassle of getting at the case drain plug. When you pull on the recoil start cord you turn the engine/oil pump which tries to circulate the oil remaining in the case. That extra cup+ of oil will mostly drain from the reservoir but some will come spitting out of the oil filter hole so have some towels on the left footboard. I've never primed the oil pump on any Polaris I've owned. Never knew you were supposed to until I seen it in the shop manual that I just got. My owners manual says nothing about it.

 

You only need to prime the pump if you drain the system completly, like for a couple days or if its a new or rebuilt engine. There has been a rare time where the pump did not get primed right off and there was some damage. This happened when the engine was started and just idled for a time and not getting enough speed to self prime. To insure a good prime pinch the breather line coming off the top of the oil tank for a minute and that will pressurize the system.

 

I suppose there is a very remote possibility that “purging the case of oil” as I’ve described above could cause a problem if the oil pump is not “re-primed,” but odds are mighty favorable that it won’t. You’ll never get ALL the oil out of the case this way, just as you won’t get ALL the oil out of the case if you use the case drain, but I change my oil every 500 miles so this method gets enough of the old stuff out of there for me to call it an oil change. I’ve never re-primed the pump and don’t plan to start now, but then I’ve been accused of “dangerous practices” before, like eliminating my winch solenoids and wiring them directly to the battery.

I am with floodrunner. Never have. Never had a problem (that I know of). I do use Power Up, but who knows if it makes a difference???
