There are three things certain in life: Death, Taxes, and the soft plastic on your beautiful four wheeler will get scratched.

The question is what do you do about it? I bought a used Kawasaki Bayou 220. It was practically new, but the owner offered to sell it for $300 below book value, because it was scratched. I washed it up and used Armor-All on the plastic and Tire care on the wheels, and it started shining really nice. Looks good.

But that has not worked on my 97 Lakota. It has those nasty scuff marks and scratches which just make it look nasty, at least close up. I heard that four wheelers do not paint very well, that a new paint job will crack. Surely, there must be some way!

If anyone knows how to put a good paint job on a four wheeler, please tell me.

I think Maier makes some paintable plastic. In an old 4-Wheel Action magizine they had a 400 Mojave which used the painted plastic. The Mojave uses the same plastic as your Lakota. Another way to go would be to get some white plasic, it doesn't show scratches neatly as much as darker colors.

 

Yes stock OEM plastic can be painted..... Its not cheap and not easy to do. BUT, it can be done. I have done the plastic on my shee and its held up great. I would contact a reputable bodyshop and have them do the work. If done correctly it will hold up.

for get spending all that money on pro jobs about 3 monthes ago i painted my 84 atc 70 with spray paint!!! boy does it look nice shines like never before ,just pic out a good color semigloss spray paint, wash the atv good ,peel all stickers off ,or cover with masking tape ,like i did and have fun, dont put it on thick the first coat ,put a light coat let it dry then go back and put as many as needed then after u are done wacth it shine and go sport your new cheap,nice paint job ps:my atc is out side all the time and have had no probs with pelling or any thing!!

Was the surface of your ATC soft plastic?

What kind of spray paint did you use? Was it enamel, acrylic, or laquer?

What did you do with scratches on the surface?

 

I would be interested in how the spray paint holds up through the winter, with the constant change in temps (cold/night vs cold/sun-heated/day). The plastic tends to contract and expand, as well as flexing during riding, and will really put the paint bond to the test. Let us know because there are many who face this question.
