A guy I go to school with is looking for a older used utility quad and is a Yamaha fan. He has no previous experience and I think it would be best he get on something that is slow and reliable to start with. The videos I've watched of the Moto4 don't show it going very fast at all, but I can't seem to find what the top speed of this old brute is? I did some research and they are very reliable from what I've read, and I think it would be a great beginner quad for him to start on, he asked me to come up with some recommendations for him. Thoughts on this? Any recommendations for a good starter Yamaha are welcome too, not stuck on the Moto4, but it was the first thing I thought of when he told me to find an old reliable utility quad. Thanks guys!

 

What size moto 4? They made 80's, 100's, 200's, 225's 250's, on and on and on. I'm gonna assume you are talking about a 200-350, the utility moto-4's will run about 35-45 mph. A 350 Wolverine could also be a good choice for a sporty utility quad.

 

Yeah, 200 to 350. And that is perfect speed for a beginner to get a hold on. Will check out the Wolverine too, how fast are those?

 

I had a 1989 250 2wd Moto4 it did 45 mph like most all Utility 250 4 stroke do. I also had a 1989 Moto4 350 Big Bear 4x4 it also only did 45mph because there greared lower and scream in top gear.

The 350 Woverine 4x4 has the same 350 motor but is geared taller and is lighter then a 350 Big Bear allowing it to do more like 55mph.

The 350 Wolverine was and still is the lightest 4x4 ATV ever made.

 

I've clocked my brother's 85 YFM200 doing 50 mph (according to the speedometer on my VW).

 

250 moto 4 I have around "90" I clock on gps speedo at 43.

 

I have to scream the guts out of my 350 to hit 50mph.It will do it but sure does not like it. 45mph seems to be the happy spot.

 

if you want a great beginner quad this is it. If you dont mind keeping on the mantinence. I have an 86 moto 4 225 and it will do 50 ***** to the wall. But these little quads are tough strong and reliable. Mine is 31 years old and still runs great with all original parts. they are strong enough to​ pull a fully loaded hay wagon at 30 mph. it will give​ my friends 07 grizzly 350 automatic a run for its money. Great beginner wheeler. mine has a pull start and starts cold first pull with no choke. Kinda amazing for a 31 year old quad that i have personally put over 5000 miles on in 3 years. These will stand up to abuse better than anything.

As mentioned the Wolverine 350's 4x4 are great beginner sport/utility quads. Ive done some light mods to mine and love it. FMF Exhaust and 10.25:1 rejetted the main to 145 and it wakes those little bikes right up.

I have a 1993 Timberwolf and 2001 Beartracker (both 250's 2x4) and they are solid as they get as well. Neither are super fast but 40mph is really enough depending on the riding you'll be doing.
