Default Need replacement ECM for 2004 Sportsman 400

Put in new battery ..... polarity reversed. ECM smoked. Need new ECM and the large connector that plugs into it.

Any ideas on where I can get a ECM and the connector?

Are you sure it wasnt the speedo you smoked. If your key was on when you connected the battery wrong it will smoke the speedo unit. Been there.

The speedo is OK . Put it in one of our other wheelers to check it. I know the ECM is gone ...... burned the harness connector off.

You must have a late model 04 with the new(at the time) ECM. Lucky you, is your connector still usable? I have seen some of those melted. You need to get the new style ECM for about $120 retail.

It is a 2004.5 model. The connector is melted. That is the part I am concerned about getting. I am sure it is a standard off-the-shelf connector, there just isn't anything left of it. I am sure the dealer would be happy to sell me a complete harness ..... but I only need the connector to splice back onto the harness.

I found this part on ebay. Does anybody know if this part is a direct replacement for the part on my 2004.5 Sportsman 400 which is 4010937 SSCB? The picture looks exactly the same.

Just maby if the recall has not been done on Your machine that the dealer will replace the connector under the recall too, that was the problem with the original ecm units, fire hazard if the battery was not disconnected.

That is an old style ecm. New style is larger and silver.
Most 2004.5 ecms were not recalled although alot seem to fail and some are a fire hazard as your problem shows. Did you operate the atv with a low battery and use the recoil starter for a while. I have seen one like yours and that was the case. Got a new harness for that one.

There is no time limit on the ECM recall, I think. Get the dealer to change it for free.
