Default polaris transmission oil

Several years ago I bought a 1996 Polaris Magnum 425. My transmission was making a whining noise so I checked and there was not oil in the transmission. I bought some pure direct drive fluid and it seemed to get a little better, but still whines. I just checked the transmission dip stick and there is a small amount of metal shavings on the stick.

The nearest Polaris dealer from me is 50 miles away. I spoke with a polaris dealer and asked if there was a substitute and he said polaris will not give that info to even the dealer. I spoke to a local Kawasaki dealer today and he said Bel ray gear saver transmission oil will work fine in a polaris. Will Bel ray transmission fluid 75 wt work in my Polaris or the Kawasaki dealer wrong? Thanks Guys!

Any good synthetic motor oil is better than the Polaris crap for your trans. I reccomend Castrol Syntec 5w50.

No gear oil. Is is too thick.

Default polaris transmission oil

What caught my attention when I spoke with the Polaris Dealer about a substitute, he acted like he wanted to tell me something then stopped himself.

Some of these old 425s have some "whine" in them when everything is really OK.

Do you think using the Castrol Syntec 5w50 oil will help with the whine vs polaris demand drive oil?

If the whine is a bad bearing no. Anyway the fluid you have in there now HAS to go.

The trans on your quad is pretty simple. Gears bearings and a chain for reverse. If you think it is damaged from lack of oil tear it down NOW before other damage is done.

It will not cost much to replace a bearing or two.

Replace the chain also.

I would say rebuild the tranny(new bearings and chain)then use Polaris AGL in it.These trannys are a chain case not gear driven like other trannys and need proper lube.

The "proper lube" would be the lube that allows it to last the longest. The Polaris AGL is not as good in the trans as the Castrol Syntec.
