I plan to get a Yamaha Grizzly 700 FI with EPS next year, and plan to get new tires with it and have a question. Which tires would be best? I ride a lot of trails, and a good little bit of mud. The deapest that I've had my Honda was a little over the fenders, but that was in water(I have had it in actual mud just over the tires, and it has 25s on it). I will have to ride hardtop quite a bit, but if I have to, I'll put the stockers on when I have to ride on the blacktop. I'm leaning towards the itp mudlight 27"xtrs, but do they gum up easily in mud, and how fast do they wear?
(I probably won't get those anyway because of the over $100 price tag). thanks in advance

 

i like the xtr's i havnt had mine gum up in mud yet. I was into some gooy clay o nthe weekend and i never havd a problem with them, great traction, they really do throw a rooster tail tho, im talking 25-30 feet when iwas hard into the flapper on my 750 bf.i love them so far, they are a little rough but im just starting to play with the air pressure in the tires, and suspention to find a smoother ride.

 

Bighorns would do good for you. They last forever and have great traction on just about any surface, including a decent amount of mud. They also ride smoother to boot.

 

Im going to sound like a Interco salesman pretty soon. Look at my pics, these tires have 1500 on them and are MINT. I will buy these when needed again. They have never had any air loss, puntures and have excellent traction in every terrain.

 

Yeah, I've seen those before, and they are one of the tires on my list but I forgot to mention them.

 

Mudlites are a solid choice, but if you spend time on asphalt, my observations have been they wear quicker due to the softer rubber. I am comparing them to Bear Claw's, and the mudlites have shown more wear. On the other hand they are lighter, provide excellent traction and handling.
I have had none of the reported problems with sidewall punctures, and I brush bust for hunting all the time. Good luck

 

Wow, i just read it,
I tought my tire was an exeption.
I just bought a BigBear 400, with MudLite,
I Like them, But one of them has a needle hole size in the sidewall,
I think, it was due to some road hazard.
I have put a patch in it, but still leaking,
but a good ( rope ) in it do the job very well for now.

 

The ITP XTRs would be an excellent choice. THey are so much more capable than the paper thin stock tires.

I have the ITP TErracross and they are excellent but a little less aggressive than the XTR.

Both will be good choices but the XTRs are better in the mud and the Terracross is a better all around tire.

I have these tires mounted on a Sportsman 500.

 

Check into Maxxis zilla's. Not the Mudzilla. Zilla's. They are light, go through mud better then mudlites, and are smooth on trails. I have had a set of 25" mudlites. They are a good trail tire. In the mud, they were like stock tires. I now have 28" zilla's on my kodiak 450, and I love them.

As far as wear goes, I can't say for sure since I have only had the tires for a few months. But if rode on pavement alot I could see them wearing fast. But if your looking for a good trail/mud tire. The Zilla's are a very good choice.

 

I second the Zillas. I've had Mudlite XL's (constant sidewall slices and measured small) and Swamplites (great tire but wore a little quick on alot of hardpack) and I have switched to Zillas and have about 800 or so miles and love them. Great in mud and though it doesn't look like they would, they ride pretty decent on hard pack.
I'm sure the radials are more comfortable but I've never gotten to the point of spending more for my ATV tires than my auto tires.
