This being my first atv I had the dealer change the oil after I bought the machine. Now I am going to do it myself and I need to know what type of oil filter I need. I am going to get the oil and filter from a auto parts store. I am planning on using Mobil 1 oil, but I need a part number for an oil filter. Also, to drain the oil is it the lower bolt which also connects the lower hose (supply line I think)?

10w-30 i beleve is what my 00 sportsman took. and the auto parts place can look up the number.

 

no i would use polaris... its made for the motor... the cams in the old popos need that oil to get up to the cams... its like 0-40 or somthing... for 20 bucks you get a oil filter and 2 quarts... imo

 

um. no ur wrong. my owners guide said 10w-30. ill bet money on it. id prove it but i dont have the owners book no more. i used 10w-30 in my sportsman for 8yrs with out an issues and 7000miles when i sold it last yr. polaris dont make oil. they dont own a oil manufaturing company. they get it from somewhere and pay them to stick ther label on it. and the oil for the new wheelers that run 0w40 is amsoil. and its like the new sportsman with the $500 fuel tank on it. if you want to replace the pump you have to get a new tank. well thats crap. you can go to a automotive place and get the same pump for round $100. just the pump. not the tank.......

 

idk ... i just know SOME older polaris's had problems with the cams not getting the oil.. and SOME people that used 10-30 or 40 had cam issues from not getting enough oil... i heard this from several other people not just on this website... i dont know what weight that polaris oil is but thats all i will use

 

yea i thought i was right.. 2-50w is the polaris ps4 and some people use mobile 1 0-40w or amsoil... this weight is reccomended because of hot machines at idle and oil pressure.. you may have ran 10-30 chuck your entitled to run whatever you want... but these motors are not car motors... i would say your a lucky one that didnt have any problems...

well lets look at it this way. if a few people out of a few thousand people have an issue with theres dont mean its an oil issue. it could have been other reasons also. now if about 1/2 of all that yr or so had that issue i can see it being an issue. but if is an oil issue its gona do it no matter what. since oil is the most importaint part to keep it going, and if that was the issue with my yr it woulda happend already before i sold it. so i musta did something right. i plowed snow, pushed cars/trucks, used it on a farm for hay racks, chasing cattle, and so on, iv also used it for many hrs of pulling a box scraper and a grader blade. it always was maintained by me. but everyones entitled to there thoughts on it. and thats what i think. but i used 10w-30 on the 2000 sportsman and on my new 2008 i use mobile 0w-40. i use what it calls for. it may not be polaris oil. but its the oil weight it calls for.

 

Use Full synthetic 0w-40 the oil pumps on the Polaris has tight tolerances and 0w flows oil to the motor alot quicker then 10w can on cold starts.

How can Polaris recommend, 10w-30 when they do not even offer it or sell it? They only sell 0w-40 in there single cylinder oil change kits since 1996. No wonder some people get premature cam wear. The new kits may be 2w-50 now but thats still closer to 0w-40 then 10w-30 is.

The OEM Polaris Oil change kit says " FOR ALL POLARIS FULL SIZE SINGLE CYLINDERS" so a guy with a 1996 Sportsman will buy the same oil and filter as a guy with a 2009 XP550 from a dealer.

I think Polaris did the 2w thing so people think they are stuck with buying oil from the dealer only, because 0W-40 was available from others while 2w-50 is not.

The 500 Fuji motor never changed since 1996 up till now except for a high duration cam introduced to the Scrambler in 98 and 2001 for the sportsman so they should use the same oil no matter what year the ATV is.

Polaris new oil is 2w-50, but 2w would still flow better on cold starts like 0w does. The first number( #w) is the cold start up viscosity rating for cold starts and the lower the number the thinner the oil,the last number is its viscosity at operating temperature, so on a warmed up motor 0w-40 is the same as 20w-40 but 20w would be like jello on cold starts compared to 0w.

Our 97 SP500 has nearly 8000 miles and has used 0w-40 Amsoil most of the time. We used many different oil filters on it but a Frame CPH6607 mostly just because it was available at Canadian tire.
