Default 2006 Sportsman 450 stator problem

So I had my starter go bad and some other electrical problems (RPMs reported wrong and battery light flashing.) Took it in to the shop and had the starter rebuilt which used up all my budget. The electrical problems I'm told are a bad stator (shorting out and over charging.) I can't afford to have them do the work (OEM stator is $380) so I'm shopping ebay for a replacement stator and am going to attempt the repair myself. It doesn't look to hard. My question is if something is shorting out wouldn't it be in the wiring to the stator rather than the coils?

Has anyone experienced a stator problem before? They told me that there was a lot of moisture in there and that caused the problem. I'm guessing that happened when one time I washed it without setting the recoil handle all the way down. My recoil rope got all wet. I thought I got it all dried out but apparently not before damage was done. The weird part is that I didn't have any problems until after a whole summer of riding.
