Default New here, Hello, and can somone help me with a polaris history/timeline of 400 2-stroke models?

Ok, so I recently purchased a 250 Polaris Trailblazer for the wife. I like the automatic feature ect. I have ridden it some to get a feel for it, and I got to admit, I have fallen in love woth it. I have been riding alot of years, and am extremly familiar with the big four manufactures ATV's/ and ATC'S for that matter. I started reasearching Polaris 400 ATV'S thinking I would maybe get myself a 400 scrambler 2x4. Now is where I am confused. I found that for awhile, Polaris made a 400 "sport" 2x4 model. I have gathered that during the same period a 400 scrambler 4x4 was made too. I look a little further, the sport dissapears, and the scrambler is offered in 2x4 or 4x4. A little further and wow the trailblazer is offered in 2x4 400cc size. I also find the scrambler is still around in 2x4 and 4x4. So I said hey I'll look at the website and see what they have now...the short answer is it appears they have nothing. At least in a 400 2-stroke sport quad.

So a little help please...what were/are the difference in these models, if any on the 2x4 side? Why all the name changes? When did they quit making 400/250cc 2-Strokes? And lastly, should I buy a 4x4 since its selectable to my undestanding, or does the 4x4 models, even when the front is disengaed "feel" like a lumbering dragged down 4x4 still?

I will also throw in I have located a '99 cherry condition 1 owner 400 sport for 1800.00, and a 2003 400 trailblazer, which looks great but I don't know its history for about the same money.

Little help/advice would be much appreciated...Thanks in advance!

All 2-strokes are being phased out of the Polaris lineup for the obvious reason:air quality, tougher EPA standards. AWD (4x4) only engages when rear tires slip 1/8 turn, you really arent aware that much and when disengages front wheels and drivelines just roll. Easier to manage than any full time 4 wheel drive atv! All the 250 and 400 engines are basically the same no matter which body style covering it! Parts are still available everywhere and probably will for some time to come.Basic thing you need to decide is do you need 2 wheel drive or MUST have 4 wheel drive, do you need a low range for pulling or is the basic hi-n-r sufficient? Other members will give you their preferences,BUT for me they could have at least left the old 250 in the lineup! Simple, easy to maintain and first and only Polaris engine offered! Came in 2 or 4 wheel drive! PICK the cleanest machine as the major difference is bodywork. Good luck

OK, one other thing...Looks to me on a side by side that the rear suspension is far more limited on the scrambler AND sport, than the trailblazer, why the difference, its almost 2" difference?

Might be just an optical illusion, if you check the specs, i'm sure the scrambler has at least as much suspension travel and probably more.
The last year of the 400 2 stroke was 2002
These bikes definately don't feel like your usual 4x4 utility atv. way lighter feel to them.
The AWD system is awesome imo. The 4x4 only kicks in when you need it, so the steering is nice and light until the back tires start to slip, then hang on tight!!! cuz its true AWD, no give anywhere.

No, I got the rear suspension travel from spec sheets, 8.8 for the Scrambler and Sport, 10.5 for the Trailblazer? What gives...and thanks for your guys' help...

What year trailblazer because it might have been when they moved to long travel suspension.

I beleive it used to be that through 2000 then at least on the scrambler it switched to long travel:

Mine has 10.5" and its a 2000 scrammy 4x4 400, it also states that in the service manual I bought for it.

Ok, now I see the difference...I wonder if I could honestly tell the difference in 2" of suspension? Definatly something to think about though...
