at one time you received the MSO - manufacture statement of origin- and used that the first time to register. you would receive the title in the mail from the state. over the years there have been a lot of atv's that have never been registered, used on private property or in remote areas. some have even changed owners still never being registered. my dad had two like this that he bought used and then never registered . I started to use one hunting and the registration was a lot cheaper than the fine. I went to the department of registration and they gave me the forms I needed. Hope this helps

Here in Ohio, you need to take a tracing, bill of sale and the quad to the dmv so they can verify that is the correct vin. Then you need to take the bill of sale, piece of paper that the dmv gave you and the tracing to the title burue (SP). There they check and see if its a hot bike and make you a title. And then you get to back to the dmv with you title and wait in line for your sticker.

It can be a real pain based on your state laws. Some states will not let you register it if the original owner did not do so. They do this so that the current owner does not get away with not paying taxes on it. As someone else mentioned, the Certificate of Origin can also be useful in proving the vehicle was first sold by a known retailer. Documents that apply to constructed items usually apply to utility trailers and such.
