1989 suzuki lt250 quadsport will not start when cold.
I have an 89 suzuki quadsport 250 that I can't get to start. When the motor is cold I can kick it all day and it will not fire. If I pull start it, it will fire in five feet and runs like a champ. When the motor is warm 1 kick usually starts it, however if I let it sit for an hour and it has time to cool down I am back to square one pull starting it. I had someone tell me it sounds like the ignition coil, I am not sure. Any help with this would sure be appreciated.
Thanks for any replies.

the part of the weak spark is possible , the problem with kickstarting is that you only get a flip over and (1 rotation) and it may not be that fast or as fast as pull starting it .
you may have a dirty stator plate or (mag plate) , sometimes water gets in under the flywheel , and causes rust and corroded parts in thier. or you may have a leaky oil seal on the crankshaft that has oil coverd some parts in thier.
And all that can cause spark to be weak , and eventuly loss of spark totaly.
A coil genraly works or it dont. a coil can breakdown under load but usuly quits on you when its hot. So i would not think its your coil or cdi box.
I would start with removing your flywheel , and cleaning under it , and take some fine 220 grit or finer emory (sand paper) and lightly sand around your stator/mag plate. by doing that , your spark should come back to being good again.
As it would than be clean .
Good spark color (the spark you want ) is : a purpleish blue in color.
a whiter spark is bad.
i hope that helps you

thanks chris,
I will have to try this in the next couple of weeks. If I have any problems I hope I can get back in touch with you. This sounds alot better than what some mechanics have told me that it has to be rebuilt. I never understood this because when it starts it runs great. Your way sounds fairly easy is it? It is a good machine I hope I can just get it right.
Thanks Again
greg.

chris,
I cleaned the flywheel and magneto and I now have good spark. I thought I would tell you the good news. Now I have one last problem, The motor is running fine and idiling good until I rev it up high and then it doesn't seem to drop back down to idle it is about half throttle. If I flutter the throttle it will go back to idle. Any suggestions?
Thanks again for all the help you saved me big time.

Check your carb(s) - sounds like you have fuel leaking in under hi revs, could also be the mixture being too rich, or you could be pushing oil up past the piston and into the chamber - the revs staying higher being the oil burning off.
