what weight oil does yamaha or anyone for that matter recomend for an 01 raptor 660

It depends on the temp you ride in.
For example:
A 20W-50 is good for temps down to 32 degrees F up to well over 115 degrees F.
A 5W-30 is good for temps down to well below -30 degrees F up to +32 degrees F.

IMHO a 15-40 is a very good oil for me. It can go below 0 F and up to 104 degrees F. Any time it gets under 0 or over 100 I don't ride anyway!!!

Some oil bottles have specs on them.

 

I agree, above 32 I use Yamalube 20W50

 

Im would but am not puttin yamalube in it the nearest dealer is 60miles away so im gonna have to go with another brand ive always used castrol or valvoline conventional and mobil 1 when i used synthetic whats the lowdown on useing synthetic or a synthetic blend in these newer type motors? Thanks for the imput...much appriciated.

 

If you use regular automotive oil it can make the clutch slip. You need to use a oil that DOES NOT have the anti wear additives. You have a wet clutch which means the oil you put in the engine get on the clutch and if it is regular auto oil that has wear additives in it your clutch will most likely start to slip. You don't have to use Yamalube but you should use a 4 stroke motorcycle oil made for a wet clutch

This is not true. Only "energy conserving oils "can" do this.
You just have to make sure you don't get an oil with the little star burst on the label. Easy enough to do.

If you want to put synethetic in it, go for it. Mobil 1 is a very good oil. There are otheres as well.
No real reason to put synethtic in your Rappy. Yahama says it's not needed. I agree with them.

Synthetic vs conventional oil

Will conventional get the job done? Yes.

Is synthetic better oil than conventional? defiantly yes,so why not use it.

Well I haven't seen any oil except for non detergent lawn mower oil that isn't marked "Energy conserving" It's energy conserving do to the wear additives which reduce friction and will inturn save fuel and in the case of a wet clutch will make it slip. If you quote me take more than the first sentence before you say I'm wrong about something. I have a shop and do Auto and ATV repairs since 1985. I just didn't want to see someone put the wrong oil in and toast their clutch
