I am having an issue with my 01 grizzly over heating. The fan doesnt seem to kick on at all ever. Sometimes it does but very rarely and my oil temp light comes on. I replaced the oil and filter thinking maybe the oil level was low since its oil cooled but still no luck. Does anyone have an suggestions before I have to take it to a shop. I am not very good with atv mechanics but I can do some basic repairs. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

 

Might want to check out your oil cooler,, if it blocked with baked mud and blocking air flow. My friends 98 600 Grizzy works fine and his fan has been out of action for years.

 

I have a 99' grizzly 600 and having the same problem. Oil change does not effect . I did a complete flush of the oil system. Also checked my cooler to make sure it was not plugged up and it wasn't. I next changed the thermo unit. The fan was still not coming on, unless I disconnected the thermo unit and short circuited the wiring. Those wires are run to the back of the 4 wheeler to some relays. After playing with those my fan started running but my Oil Temp light still comes on. Checking the temp with a temp gun my temp got up to 350F, Inlet to the cooler was 197F outlet was 167F. My next experiment is to try and change out the relay assys. Hopefully that will work. If not then I am dead on the dirt I guess.

Finally after 2 months I had a chance to start tracking down this problem. All I did was follow the 2 power wires that came from the fan and started disconnecting every wire connection I could find. The problem the whole time was massive amounts of dirt inside these connections. I wish there was a way to prevent this. I really dont want to electrical tape all the connections because it will make a sticky mess if I ever have to take something apart again.

 

i'm having the same same problem as you guys on my 99 grizzly. but i think i found the problem, the main wiring harness somehow got onto the exhaust and it melted 5 of the wires together. but my question is, how long does it take for the fan to usually kick on? i know the fan is capable of working cuz i hooked it straight to the battery. i was just wondering when it kicks on so that i know if its working or if i'll have to dig deeper into the wiring. any help is appreciated.

 

I had to leave mine running for 20 minutes or so. Then i just shut the key off and turned it back forward but not starting the atv. You can hear the fan run to cool the motor down.

 

so u just let it sit there and run for 20 minutes? or u rode it for 20?

 

I actually just let it idle in my back yard for 20 minutes... just gave it enough time to get warm. It was warm out that day so that helped too... you could always tear around on it for a few and then shut it off and back on to see if the fan runs.

 

alright! thanks for the info. i'll let er run as soon as i get the time and hopefully it'll kick on. cuz the last time i was trail ridin it seemed like it was pretty hot, but i guess all bikes get pretty hot on ur legs just from the engine heat and exhaust..but i'll try it.. thanks again

 

well i let it run for almost a half hour and nothin.... i'm thinkin that when that wire shorted out maybe it tripped the circuit breaker. does anyone know where the circuit breaker and relay for the fan are? I figure i'll check those next. thanks.
