I have read a lot about the 420 Rancher and I think I want to buy one as long as it meets my needs. As far as a trail quad I think the 420 is just what I want. I'm tellng my wife that I need a quad for work but I really want to have one as a trail machine.


I live on a small farm and I won't be using the quad as a tractor but I need to be able to plow my driveway in the winter with a decent size blade. (My driveway is 200 feet and has a 3 car turn around.) I will also be pulling a small utility trailer around on occasion.

Can the 420FE be used for the kind of work I want it to?
If not what do you reccomend I purchase that can be as good at working as it is for trail riding?

(Obviously price has to be taken into consideration).

I bought a TRX350 ES Rancher version for that same purpose. To take care of our property when the tractor is to large for the job. I pull a 850LB lawn roller just fine. Pulling is no problem but stopping is a different story. LOL I carry around my shovels, chainsaw and best thing of all, using a boom sprayer on an ATV is better then sliced bread.

I really want to know how a machine this size would plow snow. My neighbour has a 500 Rubicon that did a great job of cleaning my driveway but I want to see if I can get away with a smaller atv. The bigger the blade I could use the quicker the job gets done.

 

The 420 engine has more of a sporty feel than my 350. It likes to be ridden more reved out, and seems to make its power at higher rpm. When I am on the 350, it just has more of that work quad feel, where the 420 has more of a sport quad feel. But, that may also have as much to do with the frame as with the engine.

I don't have any experience plowing, but I have seen posts in here from folks who plow with the 350, and having way more power the 420 should do even better. Personally though, if I had to do a lot of work quad type chores, I think I would go with the Foreman 500.

 

pushing snow with it should be no problem at all. i use my foreman 450 with a 5' blade and even in 8 inches it has no problems and my buddy that pushs with me has a rancher 350 and with a 4' blade does just fine. so im sure with the new 420s a 5' blade would be just fine.

 

I have a 420 and farm about 400 acres in the mountains of VA. It will do everything you want it to do and more. I also have an '06 Foreman and the Rancher gives up very little if anything to the Foreman. As a matter of fact, the Foreman has been parked since I bought the Rancher. I already have over 1,400 hard miles on the 420 and can't find anything bad to say about it. I work it hard on a daily basis and nearly every ride consists of extremely rocky trails ranging from around 1000' to 4500' in elevation. It has worked perfectly when the temp was -15 and goes through snow even better than my old 350. I've hauled snowbound sheep, one on each rack, over steep ridges with no trail and it pulled like it wasn't even carrying a load. I regularly haul two full 100lb propane tanks to my mountaintop cabins, all the hay I can stack to feed the animals, and pull a loaded round bale wagon through the pasture to the cattle. I haven't plowed with it yet because I don't have a mount but I know it can get the job done because my old 350 plowed just fine. It's a great work quad and an even better trail quad. Possibly the best $4895 I've ever spent.

scratchindirt, that has to be one of the most positive reviews I have yet read for the 420 Rancher. If I only had an extra 5K sitting around I think I would buy one...

 

I also farm and use my quad for work. I had an 04 350 rancher and now own an 07 420 rancher. I had a cycle country snowplow on the 04 and managed to get the mount on the 420. The hard part is cutting the plastic skidplate. After using both with a 48in. blade, I would have no worries about moving up in blade size on either. I had chains for the 350, but only used them for deep snow, like 10in. or pushing up piles. The 420 is so much more machine than the 350 it amazes me, and we have used ranchers since the introduction of them. I have yet to put chains on the 420, so I`m not sure how much more traction they will add, but the traction pushing snow is very good with the stock tires. In my experience so far you won`t go wrong buying a 420, I cannot say enough good things about it. It has already gone places and done things that the 350 would not. I also see the watercooled engine being a plus for spraying too, but I will not be able to say until this summer when I put it to work spraying. Hope this helps.
