Hey i just picked up an 83 honda 3 wheeler 250r. I wanted to change the oil but i am not sure what to use. I went to a motor sports place and they gave me HP trans oil SAE 80W/85W. It says transmission oil. Does any one know if that is what i am supposed to use, if not then does any one know. The bike is a 2 stroke. Also how much oil do i put. Also i pick up a cheap little pit bike, its a 4 stroke and i was also looking to change the oil on that does any one know what i should use, and how much.

I would use a non auto oil in 10w30 or 10w40. You can use the gear oil but it is a little heavy four winter riding. Just make sure it is for a motorcycle as the oil you will be using on the R is your trans and clutch oil. I would get the oil from a honda dealer as that is the best oil to use. As for the pit bike we need a little more info on that like brand and cc. Hope this helps some.

my 250r uses 10w 40 motor oil in the trans and it has a filler cap and a screw on the side of the engine case . After draining old oil remove the filler cap and oil check screw and then put oil in filler until it starts oozing out of oil check hole then replace oil check screw . all done from CLYMER manual 1981 thru 1984 ATC 250r.
oil capacity 0.98 US quarts
at overhaul 1.2 US quarts
oil type SAE 10W-40

so what your saying is i could just use any 10w40 car motor oil. it doesnt have to be any kind of special motor cycle oil? i could use, say like a Castrol brand motor oil as long as its 10w40 right.
Thanks for the info guys

No, do not use 10w40 motor oil for a car. You need to get a 10w40 for a motorcycle because of your clutches. Almost all motorcycles and atvs use a wet clutch so you need to make sure a oil that does not use moly in it. Never use auto oil in a motorcycle or atvs. Hope this helps some.

There is a clear picture in manual that shows plain penzoil 10W-40
motor oil and says nothing about any special motorcycle oil.

I have a lot of experience with repair maintaining and drag racing these bikes and own 2..
I have not had any problems with this oil and all I do is drag race which is hard on the tranny
and clutch..

I do not care what you use, because that is your choice. I have used auto oil in mine in the past. What I am trying to say is that if you really research this topic you will heere the same thing that I am telling you. Most automotive oils contain moly and that is not good for a wet clutch system. If you go to a Honda dealer they are going to reccomend their version of oil and if you talk to one of the mechanics they will pretty much tell you the same thing I am saying. The final line is use what you want and what ever you can afford.

Honda's HP trans oil is the factory 2 stroke gearbox oil. It is suitable for use in all 2 stroke gearboxes.
