Default KFX 700, How hard is it to change the belt and check and adjust the valves?

I have a belt for my 2004 kfx and I don't want to pay the cost the stealership wants to charge to put it on. Can I put it on myself, I heard that the belt has to be adjusted with the exact amount of slack or something?? Can it be done without a special tool? Also, I don't think the valves have ever been checked or adjusted. I looked on the 700.v website and it shows how to look at the valves, I don't know if I understand 100% what to do, especially if they need adjusting. Is there an easy way to do this, or a website that shows someone like me how to do it in more detail? Thanks in advance.

How to Change a Belt

Check that out. Changing belts is relatively easy. You "CAN" do it without a clutch remover tool, but you'll probably hurt yourself. You can get the tool online for around 30 bucks.

Get a Kawi's genuine service manual if you want to do the works by yourself CORRECTLY. That will be your best investment for your quad. Installing the belt is one thing, but you need to set the belt deflection within the spec. Usually the new belt will be in spec, but if the converter sheaves are worn out you will need to remove the shim(s) in the driven converter to make it tighter (longer lasting, less slipping & better top speed).

I looked for a long time for service manuals and found, in the end, that the dealers can order them for less than you can get them from Kawi or the web. I too don't like going throught the "stealerships", but did in this case.

It's not the simplest of tasks. I eventually had to go buy the the tools ($130.00 from the local bike shop, paid way more than I had to but ran out of time). Once we broke it loose everything else was a piece of cake. Cheapest owners manual, go to EBAY and type in "KFX700" you'll find CD Roms for $10-15 (it's the whole manual). Just print as needed. As far as valve adjustments, can't coment...Never been an issue....All I can say is when Crower Power (the cycle cam division) built my bike they told me that the heads were almost indestructable, andone of the best designs they ever seen....Doesn't mean there won't be a replacement or adjustment needed down the road. I'm not a real mechanical guy, but I do know if there hydraulic there's no adjustment necessary. Mechanical lifters than yes..................Can someone educate us on this ?

I dont know all the technical points of the valve adjusting, but it is necessary. Mine were off and the bike wouldnt idle well, and was a little harder starting. Got the adjusted and it is like new. I have heard you can jack the heads up if you leave the valves out of adjustment too long...

All Kawi quads valves need to be adjusted about every 50 hours. If you don't, valve edges will be all dished out and the head valve seats will be digged in needing the 3-angle valve job or head replacement if worn out badly.
