Looking at buying a 2005 700 prairie.Took it out for test ride and it runs rough,back fires when you back off the throttle.I did a few top end runs and on the first one it acted like I hit the kill switch at 61 mph.It came back to life when I let off the throttle .next run it did it at 57 mph. Im told it puffed smoke when i let off the throttle.It pulls hard up till when it cuts out.starts good as well.this machine has 4100 miles.Any ideas?

ok now these machines tend to backfire when you rapidly let go of the gas, it's normal but you can change jets etc to get rid of that if you are really concerned about this... I'm not concerended. The deadness at 61 mph? that's weird. 61 means you are wide open, you get the hesitation when you give it more gas around 30km/hr and the hesitation is breif. If that's what you are experinceing then the medication for that is a aftermarket CDI or a holeshot thingy. Puffed smoke? what colour? white is mosture (radiant fluid) blue is oil. Check rad fluid level and check your airbox for oil that might have came out of your overflow. Also check choke springs, I would say they are ok if you can get the machine over 30.

 

I could understand if it was hitting the rev limiter at 61 but,it flat out dies until it slows down.Also the back fireing is excessive,my buddies 650 bf doesnt backfire at all.the backfireing could be heard from 1/2 mile away.The guy giveing me the smoke story was to far away to tell what color it is.Im thinking it may be a fowled plug from the dealer pulling it in and out everyday ,chokeing it to get it running,and pulling it out without warming it up every day.

 

I think there's carb sliders issues.. There is 2 plugs on the machine and it starts on one, so maybe but you would notice that when you even listen to it idle. They also had a choke spring issues in the past. Excessive backfireing is not normal, it should backfire on rapid decelleration. Also water in the tank could cause this.

 

The loud bang from exhaust during deceleration could be theoretically either too lean or rich carb condition. However, it has been more of too lean in my experience. You may do some test and see if you can duplicate the problem by doing following:
1). Leave choke on and test ride.
2). Leave air box lid off and test ride.
Then you can determine whether too lean or too rich, and go from there.

 

Well, the dealer changed the plugs.The rear cyl. was a little rich,but not bad.Same problem.AAAHAAAA, While standing there looking it over I spotted About 2.5 inches of wiring harness melted together.It looked like it had been rubbing on the top of the rear shock,but It couldnt have due to the distance between the two.So here I sit,waiting to see if he gets it fixed and running right.
