Bayou 220 timing chain question
I ordered a manual for this thing, but it's not here yet and I need to put a timing chain in my son's 91 Bayou 220. Two quick easy questions for someone with a manual...
1. Is the cam sprocket mark supposed to be at the top and inline with the camshaft/crankshaft centerline or is there some other mark or location to line it up with.
2. Is the "T" on the flywheel/rotor top dead center (when it's centered in the window), or is the mark that is 3/16" or so to the left of the "T" TDC?
Thanks in advance!
Larry

first the line before the T not the T itself is what you need to line up with the reference mark in the cover hole. Now make sure it is on the compression stroke then line up the line before the T with the mark in the case. Then you want to line up the little dot on the cam sprocket with the raised line on the outside top of the cylinder head. and thats it make sure to tighten the cam sprocket bolt to 25 ftlbs and make sure the cam chain is tightened with the tensioner

You're the man, TMJ67...thanks a bunch. My thirteen year old will be happy tonight!
I'm totally helpless without a manual and I gave up a long time ago on Chilton's, etc. I have a factory service manual for everthing I own. ('cept this 220 and it should be here soon.)j
Thanks again,
Larry

no prob. I am using the clymer manual it is pretty good
I just changed the timing chain and guides on mine last week along with cam, cam bearings and rockers. i have an 88 and it was used on a farm and i dont think they ever changed the oil lol. its so quiet now i can hear stuff other than ticking sounds. stuff is easy to tear apart but it sux putting it togther withough the manual for all the torque specs.

Just got her done...pretty straightforward. For anyone else attempting this, the mark on the top of the head DOES line up with the crank/cam centerline. And boy is she sure quiet! My step son has been saving his $$$ for an ATV and I found this pretty clean 91 Bayou 220 with new tires on it for $350. Needed the timing chain, carb kit and a ring job (smokes). Should have around $600 in it when we're done and should be in pretty decent shape.
Thanks again bmj67
