Default Big Bear shifting question

1. How does the shifting work on these machines? On a motorcycle, its 1 down and 4 up.

2. When in gear can the bb sit idle?

3. Can you have it in third gear for example and start off from a dead stopor do you have to shift through the gears?

4. Reverse, can you switch into reverse in any gear and go?

Default Big Bear shifting question

1. If its like most utilities, neutral is at the bottom of the shift patten and all you gears are up.
2. Yes, with any auto clutch the bike will idle whether in gear or not.
3. You could but it would move slow and its kinda hard on the bike.
4. All auto clutch quads I've seen have reverse ALL the way down. Usually, they have some kind of lock out mechanism to keep you from going into reverse when your in neutral.

Hope this helps.

to get to reverse you turn a key thingy on the dash then shift down, there no clutch and once warm it will idle any gear , 1 down 5 up, although it could use 6 up.

My big bear had a shifter on the LH fender that you used to put in reverse. Neutrals at the bottom then it is five up

Default Big Bear shifting question

Just need a little clarification;

1. So to put the BB into reverse, it needs to be all the way down and then you can shift through the gears while in reverse?

2. Instead of starting in real low first gear, you can start off from a dead stop in second or third for example?

To put the bigbear into reverse it MUST be in Neutral. Once in neutral turn reverse **** and shift down. it will stay in reverse until you shift up. Also you will not have to turn any **** to go back Neutral or 1-5 gear. The bigbear or any other quad that I know of does not have more than one gear for reverse.

2. Instead of starting in real low first gear, you can start off from a dead stop in second or third for example?

Yes, You can start from any gear 1-5. Start from let say 3rd gear and assuming the bike in in neutral just shift UP on the gear shift 3 times and give'er the gas...

Default Big Bear shifting question

I have a 1991 big bear with the reverse lever on the left front fender. You must step on the rear brake lever to be able to put it into reverse. You can shift it into reverse while in any forward gear but this does not affect the gearing of reverse,it is always the same.Yes you can take off in any forward gear but this can be very hard on the clutch if your in a high gear or in mud or on a hill.I wouldn't recommend taking off in any higher gear than 2nd and thats on flat hard ground. If you don't like shifting get a belt drive.

I own an 04 bear and you do not NEED to be in neutral to shift into reverse. You can be in up to 2nd gear. Then you twist the reverse **** and shift down. This does not mean when you shift out of reverse, you will start back in 2nd gear. Once you shift into reverse, the shift pattern resets when you decide to shift forward again. Also in another reply about shifting through reverse. There is only one reverse gear, you cant put it in reverse and then shift through the gears to go faster in reverse. Hope this helps.
