ATC 200/250? Help me ID Please
I am buying a ATC something or other from a freind who thinks it is an 87 250. I can't find the serial number on the frame. Is there any other way to tell what it is. It has electric start, the headlight it permanently mounted and can't be removed for a spotlight. It does not have a rear shock which makes me think it is a 87 200S. The only 250 I can find close is a 250 ES which I do not think is correct. Any help is appreciated. I can't find any other numbers on the motor other than the remnants of the ATC saticker on the back of the fender. Thank You

It will either be a '82-'83 ATC200E BigRed or a '84-'85 ATC200M
The 200S models never had electric start and the '84 200ES BigRed and the '85-'87 250ES BigRed/250SX all had rear suspension.....the only Honda utilty trikes to have such.
Look at the steering stem portion of the frame where the lower triple tree goes through it. You may have to use sandpaper if it has been painted over, but there is a serial number stamped right there. Write it down and then use the search feature here on the forums and type Honda ID under the ATC section. I have several old posts that go into detail with every serial number from every Honda ATC ever built for mass production the USA.
The engine numbers are also found in those same posts.

first of all the best way to find out if it is in fact a 250es is it will have reverse and a removeable headlight with only a metal cage around it. 85-86 only. Here is a bit of history for ya...On December 31 1986 at midnight all manufacturers of three wheelers had to shut down the lines. That was the date set to completely get rid of them. some people called them a 1987 because they bought them in 1987. OK now back to your question. they also made a 250sx. That did not have reverse it had a single headlight with a large red plastic housing but still had full suspension. You must be looking at a 200E or 200M or even a 200S. Any of those should have a high/low range lever around the sprocket. any other questions feel free to ask.

250X350Xconversion,
Not flaming at ya buddy, but there isn't but a few facts in anything that you wrote there.
There was in fact 1987 models of several trikes. Anything built after February of any given year can be officially the "next year" model. That is for the manufacturer to decide. How do you think it is possible to go and buy 2005 models right now?? Alot of folks think the ATC250R and ATC350X died in 1986 due to the CPSC regulations, but Honda never had any plans to build those trikes for 1987 anyway. The TRX250R was far outselling the ATC version and Honda wasn't supporting a trike team...but a quad team. The 1987 TRX250X was built to replace the 350X as well regardless of the ban on trikes. The 250X was designed in 1985....well before the CPSC got involved. I have gone off topic, but the fact is....there are indeed several official 1987 trike models out there with VIN numbers to prove it.
The 250SX does have reverse.
The 200M and 200S do not have a Hi/Lo range.........on any year model.
I think you are confusing the entire line of 200 trikes as to having the same drivetrains. There are 5 different configurations of them.
